Ok. Still can’t grasp a sump not overflowing.

The power goes out. The line running from the sump to tank might backfill, but a check valve would stop that.

But gravity continues to send water down the line from tank to sump. With a overflow box, or holes drilled high in back of tank, I understand that the water would stop siphoning out once it reached the overflow point

But what about tanks that are drilled on bottom?! I am seeing a lot of these tanks at LFS. If drilled on bottom, wouldn’t tank just keep overflowing?!

Don’t check valves only function in outlet line (can’t work on inlet?)? Am I wrong? Help?!!

Someone please educate me. What am I missing?

Post a few pictures of your set up, and yeah they're designed for not flooding on a reef ready basically. Appropriately sized return pump and water levels make it work.

Drilled on the bottom gets a tube going up to top water level or overflow box. Sump return line should just barely be underwater.
Oh, so inside the overflow box, hiding the plumbing holes in the bottom, you run pvc pipe up to top of water line (?). So only water flows in from top of pipe down (?). Then you can set up a herbie method or something. Ok. That helped a lot! I never got to see (or get a good look) at a complete set up. That makes sense (if I’m not crazy). Thank you! That helped a lot.

Yeah the newer tanks have an emergency overflow also

No pics. I’m still researching and planning (tank. equipment, set up). I am thinking a 150-180 gallon. 72” long. I have done FOWLR with canisters and hang on for years. I have never had a sump set up.

My sump set up debate is fuge or no fuge. Maybe a media reactor with bio pellets instead in that compartment?

180 is the way to go, this is a waterbox peninsula. It's all pre plummed, comes with a sump made for the tank, and an ato tank... If you can afford such a system please just start here. I had invested thousands of dollars into my 120 that I just set up last year and I already upgraded.

This was my 120

It's around 4k for the bigger 6' tanks with a stand and everything but lights. Trust me, don't waste your money on a marineland stand, and a black rimmed reef ready thats like 3k anyway because you're gonna be upset when you have to bend over to look in the tank. I would do alot of research on redsea reefers and waterbox aquariums. Just my 2 cents if you're just getting into it.

Thank you! Your tank looks awesome! How do you have your sump set up?

So it drains from display, goes through filter socks, then into a refugium, then my skimmer, then through media to the return pump.

Thanks again. Especially for recommendation on the waterboc. The 220 looks very nice. And while I can’t afford it today, doesn’t mean I couldn’t afford it in a year. I was looking at 180 gallon reef ready (but with a rim, obviously cheaper, but I’d love to go rimless with sapphire glass).

I really liked the look and and style of a trigger sump systems. But if the water box comes with everything ready to go, takes some of the complications out of it. Being my first attempt with a sump set up, maybe that would be an easier way to go.

Thanks again!

Yes please just hold out for that perfect tank, unless you want a science project of a display. I got sick of seeing cords and having to bend over to look into my tank, it was worth the 4 grand or so just because it's a forever tank ya know. Only buy one tank is the main goal, if you're interested in reefing and have nothing, I suggest a 40 breader until you have the money for a big tank, you can always use the light/rocks/sand when you get that big tank you worked all year for ya know.

I started saltwater (FOWLR) over 10 years ago. Went from a 30 to 60 to 90 to 180. I know all about spending to much money (lol). I quit salt a couple years ago and have been running a 115g freshwater African cichlids tank. Just before Christmas I got myself a Nuvo 20 (to try for a mini reef tank, I had never tried corals and wanted something new). Then to much time looking at gear and LFS that the bug bite me again. So now I want something BIG again! 72” would replace the freshwater tank eventually. So I have time to plan and get it right once! Thanks again.

I’m currently setting up a bottom drilled tank. It is still relatively empty and has a clear glass weir. This let me get a few good pics to illustrate for you.

The main part of the display can only drain about an 1/4” before the weir dams off the two intakes.

Again, very helpful. As I am now knee deep in Redsea vs Waterbox. Question: do you have only a skimmer in your sump (or refuge?). Any after thoughts on sump size, lighting. Was the 4 hydra 32 necessary?

Sorry, stupid question. I see both now. Better question, what type (size) / brand skimmer is that??
