Well, stupid me. I have been leaving a large hunk of hydnophora sit perched stop a ledge in the tank without being secured to the rock. Never been an issue. Until it became an issue. dang!!

Last night one of the larger snails must have knocked it off the ledge. I came to the tank this morning to find it sitting on top of one of my nicer frogspawns. Having a nice meal. dang!!!

Anyway, I separated them. Hydnophora is fine. Probably very satisfied.

Frogspawn - not so happy. Still has some translucent mucous or whatever around it.

Two questions -

1. Will this poor guy die? Any chance it can come back? (Yes, I've just moved it so it doesn't happen twice)

2. If it's on the road to death, do I need to remove it from the tank (will it somehow harm other life in the tank)?

Appreciate your thoughts!!!

I'd leave it be and see what happens. It may die, but a small frag like that won't do anything to hurt your tank if it should not survive.

Thanks a lot. Was my plan. dang. Now I feel horrible!

Been trying to spear a gorilla crab all week and instead forgetting to worry about some of the most basic things.

IMO, it looks like a goner…but don’t let that discourage you! If there’s still flesh, there’s always some chance at recovery as far as I’ve seen!

I had a similar experience where my frogspawn was precariously perched to a rock. It got knocked off and fell into the sandbed. I for sure thought it would die (it looked similar to that picture, though not as bad), until it slowly recovered. These things can be quite hardy. I’m glad to see yours is recovering as well. Nice frag!

For those of you (aka all of you!) that have been super awesome and kind here ... Here is a photo of today's frogspawn. So pretty!!!

ALSO, AN ADDED BONUS-- I caught a gorilla crab with tongs after weeks of hunting the guy.

He had cornered himself in a nice cave over the last few days. I had been trying to trap him in there with rocks, starving him slowly, but he was strong enough to push them away.

Today, I added some weight to the block with another rock, and saw him start to dig in the sand to get around my "roadblock" ....

My opportunity was here - I grabbed him by the claws thru the sand , while the rest of his body was still in the sand. He couldn't see me coming. One swipe with the tongs and he was in my grasp. Enjoy the sump.
