Hello,

I have 2 Aptasias in my tank. I was told to use Superfly gel, but I have this glue on hand will it work and be safe? Can I really apply it underwater directly covering the Aptasia?

I wouldn't use it. Unless it's specifically a coral or marine glue I think the general rule is to avoid putting it in the tank. The flammable warning on the glue also makes me think it probably shouldn't go in the tank.

Cyano Acrylate I believe is used as reef safe glue. the glue basically has to be gel like. I dont buy glue often from HD so im not 100% sure. I would personally go to a local fish store and see if they have any coral glue

Is there a specific glue I can get at Home Depot you can recommend?

Thanks,

Mike
Cyanoacrylate superglue gel is safe in marine and freshwater aquaria and sets very quickly underwater. Many non-reef glues based on this stuff are safe for aquaria (though check the web to make sure). I personally use this one (Gorilla glue also offers a few safe glues):

I can't find the active ingredients on that product. It says it's not food safe so personally I wouldn't use it. What you want is Methyl 2-Cyanoacrylate. Any product that is 100% this is safe.

This is false. Just because it's not made for marine tanks doesn't mean it can't be used. And as a matter of fact Methyl 2-Cyanoacrylate itself is flammable and we absolutely use it in our tanks.

I used superglue on some aptasia I had and it never had any negative effects in my system.

If you are interested in a alternative way to remove aiptasia, may I suggest having some berghia nudibranchs in your tank? We have some for sale on our site, but basically, these fellows only target and eat aiptasia, and are very hardy.

I bought this yesterday....it should work right? If this doesn't work then next are some Nudi's
The product description says it contains ethyl cyanoacrylate which also seems to be safe based on posts in other threads here.
The description also specifically recommends it for "fragging for coral reefs.” Pretty cool!

Ya saw that so I figured can't get any better
My only question since it's my first time gluing anything in a tank, can I really apply this stuff underwater directly into the Aptasia and it will stick to the rock? Really? Is that how it works?

Thanks!!

Personally, I have never used glue on a aptasia. If you get water in the container, it's toast. It will harden up.

Since the glue hardens very quickly underwater, I would take the rocks they’re attach to out of the water to glue. You could also dab some glue on the end of something, say the handle of an algae scraper, and smear it on the Aiptasia.
