So I accidentally left a failed pump exposed in my QT tank and my yellow coris wrasse decided to get himself wedged inside the output of the pump. One of his eyes looks pretty bad. This was on Saturday. He's swimming pretty wells and easting. I'd love some feedback if there was a way I can help him. Thanks!

Oh geez, poor guy. That eye might be a goner.

If it was me, I'd start by adding some smaller PVC pipes for him to hide in. Good hiding places help to reduce stress, which he's got more than enough of- that has to hurt. Beyond that, watch closely for infection. Don't know that there's much else to be done. Hope he recovers.

This looks quite severe to the eye. That said - eye injuries usually recover. The problem here - given his activity level, etc- I wonder whether the suction against the eye has caused brain damage. I do not think there s anything to do - except observe

If you see signs of secondary infection (increasing white or red coloration) you could treat it with Maracyn 1 in a treatment tank, otherwise it is just a wait and see if it can heal issue (that can take 3+ weeks).

So the full back of the tank is an overflow. The left side has 2 ports for return pump. The top pump was on ands he was stuck in the hole of the port for the bottom pump. So there was some suction but it was indirect. He's acting normal so I'm guessing he didn't incur brain damage but we'll see. I had the same assumption of my ex wife, j/k!

Is that the same/similar to KanaPlex? I have that on my QT shelf of goodies.

Thanks!

No, Maracyn 1 is erythromycin and is better for treating gram positive bacterial issues which it appears, eye infections often are.

Erythromycin is generally against gram positive - I have been surprised - how many gram negative organisms it also occurs. However - Yes.

While maracyn AKA maracyn 1 is proven most effective, kanaplex may work as it contains kanamycin sulfate but wont be more effective than ethromyacin

Thanks everyone! So will Maracyn Oxy do the same thing? I'm trying to find the ingredients but only see what the treatment symptoms are.

Thanks again!

However, the gram negative ones it affects are mostly not fish pathogens....

No - it is mainly Sodium Chlorite which addresses fungal issue and fin/tail rot

What is interesting - is that it's more active against - for example pseudomonas and others - in alkaline conditions. I don't know whether that means pH 8 or 10 lol:). But I totally agree with you
