So I went to a LFS today and I am gonna have a 40g breeder rimless made for me rimless with all holes drilled with a black background.

My question is this. I already own a metal stand. Do I need to lay a sheet or two of plywood down to give stability to the bottom baffle of glass since there is no brace?

Does the metal stand have a solid top?

If it's a rimless, because there is no brace, the entire bottom panel needs to be supported. So you could put down a piece of thick plywood and get something like a yoga mat, or leveling mat to go between that and the tank.

Have you discussed d your metal stand with the tank builder? I would seek their input first and foremost on proper support for their tank.

Important question... Does the rimless tank have a bottom trim? If so, then just the metal stand should suffice IMO.

If the bottom of the tank has no supporting bottom trim and rests fully on the bottom pane of glass, than in addition to a 3/4” sheet of plywood, I would still consider making a frame beneath the plywood sheet to support the center span to avoid any warping in the middle. Something as simple as 1x3s built on edge, into an “8” frame to lay over the metal stand attaching the plywood on top would provide the proper support for that bottom pane of glass.

See the top part of this stand frame for reference.
