This is my first setup. I got this setup used from a guy that had things set up just as the pic shows. I'm concerned about weight. The tank does not fit the entire stand and leaves a several inch gap in the back. There's only one relatively thin cross board in the middle. Is this normal? It's a 55 gal tank with 80 lbs of and and plenty of LR. It worked for him but I just don't want any mishaps.

Here's my two cents.....I was never crazy about the 55 for a reef tank. The 12 inch depth makes rock structure very difficult. That stand looks to be for a 75 or 90 gallon tank. I'd spend the extra cash for a 75 and have that total 18 inches to do some nice rock work. If you get a standard non drilled tank, Glass-Holes is a great overflow.

My concern is that the tank isn't properly secured by not filling the entire space. Is this a problem? I don't know much about weight distribution of large tanks

To specifically answer your question.....I would not be happy with a 12 inch tank on a 18 inch stand unless I cover that entire top of that stand with 3/4 plywood.
