I have a 2.5 gem tang coming tomorrow, I want to separate it from the other fish in my 100g.

I would believe that is to small but if he seems to fit sure

Unless you have unusually tiny hands, that should work ok for a 2 1/2” fish as long as it cannot squeeze through the gaps.
