My wife is paranoid about a flood ruining her (All Hail!) wood floors and she about had a heart attack when she saw the return line siphon begin to fill the return pump chamber until the loc-line outlets injested air and the siphon was broken. I explained that we need to be careful to keep the loc-line outlets aimed near the top to avoid siphoning too much DT water. Suffice to say that freaked her out even more so I told her I would drill some holes in the return line fitting to prevent any return line siphon.

So.... Before refilling the tank I drilled three 1/8" holes in the loc-line 'splitter' fitting just above the water line and I aimed the drill such that the holes point down towards the water. The 3 holes appear to be doing their job and not allowing any significant siphon from the return line. I realize that these 1/8" holes will have to be maintained/cleaned or they will fill up with calcium deposits (or some other scuzz).

Does this seem to be a reasonable solution or is it going to cause problems in the long run?

Thanks.

You could look into a check valve as well if you want to add another layer of siphon prevention.

Check it while you stand there see if it will work. Simulate a power outage. I have what looks like the same thing in my tank and it works.

I have verified that it breaks the siphon numerous times. I was just wondering if there are issues I haven't thought about with this configuration.

Only issue I had with doing the same was salt creep from the mild "splashing" it makes at the surface. Eventually I just slowed the return pump down when I got tired of wiping off salt spray.

noise and salt creep filling the holes are the 2 "worries". Can you raise the output to just under the surface?

Holes just under the surface of the water may not have the salt creep issue.

I just make sure to clean the holes every once in a while so it doesnt get clogged up. Run a brush over the holes and you are fine. I also have mine under the water surface.

You could also limit how long loc line is so when you have it as low as it can go and you lose return pump the sump is big enough to handle the inflow.

You could also only do that when you're out of town.

But siphon break holes are solid answer and multiple are better.
