Will this work ok? I know the overflow box is flush with the top of the tank but I’m not sure if that matters?

Should work fine, just make sure to clean it during water changes. With your first picture I thought it was metal, but second picture solved that :) Where did you get that drain cover?

I got it from My LFS. The dumb butt tank builder who built my tank drilled the holes wrong. So now I need to figure it out

That doesn't look like it would work well for surface skimming or maintaining your water level. I would slap one of these over it.

how would it not maintain water level? That’s what I was concerned about, but my LFS said it was fine

can I modify the overflow skimmer box and just caulk that to my tank? I still have it.

With an overflow box the water level maintained right at the top. It overflowed over the top and then goes through the bulk head. The level might change a few mm when you turn the pump up or down but it is un noticable.

With your setup there is no overflow to maintain the water level. the water has a lot less space to work with so the level is going to fluctuate a lot more if you have variations in flow or if the screen gets clogged with algae or even just a bit snail. And you won't be able to have it fully submerged because then you would have to matches the flow of your pump exactly with capacity of your gravity fed drain.

Ive used this type with no issues. A little noisy with gurgling but nothing gets past that intake

ok, modify my skimmer box it is. I’m just gonna make it so on my skimmer box there is no back (just enough to caulk down) and call it a day.

no one seems to answer this, but it doesn’t matter that the back box is gonna be level with the skimmer box?

The box on the back side shouldn’t matter as much as the box your putting inside tank.

the water level in the back should remain the same as Water lever on the inside box. If your able to silicone the over flow on inside I personally think you would be good to go, but I’m no expert.

Do you have photos of the box you want to silicone inside? Maybe a photo holding it in place for a visual?

That should be fine, just make sure the top of the red emergency pipe is below your water level.

You know I just realized with a 2 drain system like that the emergency stand pipe could be used to control the water level the way an over flow box normally would. I'd still go with adding the the overflow box, but I did overlook how that actually could be made to work
