Not sure what you're referring to. Zooxanthellae live inside of corals and are what uses the lights over our tanks to photosynthesize and produce sugars that the coral feed off of. Are you maybe referring to coralline algae?I have green algae on some of my Monti and some areas of zooxanthellae will the zooxanthellae grow over the green algae ??? Thx for any info..
The zooxanthellae dont actually do any growing of the coral skeleton. All the zooxanthellae do is live within your corals and photosynthesize. The coral polyp itself is what creates the coral skeleton and grows. As far as the algae covered spots, it's dead and rotting away. The algae is feeding off the nutrients that the decaying coral skeleton is releasing. It is possible for the coral to grow back over that spot. But depended on how big and bad it is, and where on the coral it is. You may want to cut it off.I had my monti’s start to bleach which I think was do to a rusting MP 40 wet side. Now the bleached parts have green algae on it , so I guess what I’m asking are those parts of the coral gone for good or will the zooxanthellae form on those parts again?
