Hey everyone! So im one of those people that loves to spend hours going through others build threads seeing how everyone does things and then the progression of their tanks, boy do i waste a lot of time doing this! Well the time has finally come for me to set up my 6ft 125g tank again so i though, you know what, this time around i'll do a build thread!

So i'll start with going back 4-5 years when i first got into the hobby. Me and my wife (newly married) moved out of an apartment and into a house and i jumped on this to setup my first tank (wife finally gave in, she couldn't think of any more excuses to say no! haha) I found a cheap 30g on craigslist and the journey began.

My First 30g tank.

Well probably about 6 months of this tank running i discovered petco's $1 per gallon sale and decided this was the perfect excuse, it was time to upgrade, so i got a 55g. I built my first stand for this tank and also decided to try out LEDs and built my own fixtures through rapid LED. Everything was going awesome, happy fish, happy coral, i was officially hooked.

A few more months passed and i was getting an ich to move. I wanted get out of rented and buy my own place. Well at the time wifey didnt have the same desire, she wasnt convinced we were ready and we had a really sweat deal on where we were living at the time and she wanted to make the most of it. I saw this as an opportunity and we made a deal, time for another upgrade! Off i went to to LFS and bought the 125g

Original 125g

Oh boy did i love having such a large tank and everything went well for the first few months as it had been ever since i got into the hobby but then the learning curve kicked in. The dreaded ich followed by aptasia and then hair algae problems. The frustrations i had read over and over of other reefers dealing with i was now personally at war with. To make matters worse after about a year of this tank running we had been told the house we were renting was being sold. Given the short amount of time we had to find a new place and not wanting to brake the bank because of our future plans we had no choice but to move into an apartment. This meant the break down on the 125.

In the apartment i had enough space to keep a 40 breader, i got to keep about half of my live stock and all of my coral which i managed to cram into this now small tank. unfortunately as everything was a transfer from the 125 i was still battling aptasia and hair algae and the move just made things worse and started to get out of control. Life changes kept coming and i landed a new job but it meant i would be away from home a LOT. My wife doesn't mind helping out with the tank but the state it was in i couldnt put it on her so i took drastic action. I sold off 90% of my coral and livestock and dropped the tank size down to a 20L to become more manageable and things started to settle down.

40 Breeder before things took a dive.

So time moved on and our lease was drawing closer to its end and we decided that the time was as good as any to make the move and buy our first home. 4 months later, a week before Thank Giving and a whole lot poorer we closed on our house! The house has needed a fair amount of fixing up which is why im only just starting to get around to getting the 125 up and running.

Every since we moved into a new home i have been using the 20L as more of a holding/frag tank. I still have a couple of my original corals that date back to my original 30g that have been put through the ringer but are still fighting strong. I also have a swissguard basselet (love this fish!) and clown pair that have made it with me since the original 125.

Now for the good stuff, the build!
Specs;
125 gallon 6ft marineland tank with 40g sump.
Lights; DIY LED with supplemental T5
System controlled via APEX

And thats it so far! haha honestly these are the only things that are for certain, mainly because i keep changing my mind on everything else, until i make a decision and make the investment nothing else is a guarantee, for example i really want the WAV pumps but at this time i cant bring myself to spend that kind of money (still investing in the house) so i could end up with jebaos or a used gyre. It'll be a surprise for all.

What i will say is im very DIY orientated so there are some things that are re-purposed and wont look pretty but hey if its out of sight and functions how it should them im all for it.

Time to start the build, the tank and stand were stored in a friends garage while we were in our apartment so first thing i did once getting it back was clean it up and then take out the corner overflows, they take up way to much space! Im going to go with a slim overflow and a DIY external box with bean animal drain. More on that to come.

I decided i wanted to redo the stand to give me more space.

Putting the Kregg to use. Love this tool!

Finished stand just needs a coat of paint.

Quick update, been moving along slowly....

So I drilled the back of the tank for the external overflow box. I know I know the holes are at different levels and it bugs me too but I didn't like where I drilled the first so I had to readjust for the second. I also repainted the back as it was all scuffed up from the moves.

image.jpeg

So here's the external overflow box I've put together, this was orginally on my 40b but was only set up for a herbie drain so I had to modify for a bean animal set up. It's not pretty but it should do the job.

So here's what I've been up to over he last few days.
image.jpeg

Here's my sump made out of a 40 breader. The aim was the keep it simple! Top left section is for the drains that then flows into the bottom left section for filter media. Big center for skimmer/heaters and whatever else then finally the return on the right. Also installed float switches for Apex ATO.

image.jpeg

Sump in place and tank/stand moved into its final position.

image.jpeg

Finished the drain plumbing. Primary and secondary drains on the left and emergency drain is on the right.

image.jpeg

Aquascaping is done! I've really tried to create some unique structures. It's kind of difficult with a narrow tank but I'm pretty happy with what I've achieved. I used Marco e400 mortar in places and epoxy in others.

image.jpeg Filled the sump first to test the drains and overflow box for leaks. All was good so the tank it getting filled!

It's been a little while since I updated so here's a quick overview of what's been going on. Tank has been up and running (so to speak) for almost 2 weeks now. No leaks and fine tuned the overflow so it's pretty quiet which I'm happy about.

And here's my lighting and canopy! Neither of which is quite finished haha I'm waiting on parts to finish the canopy and for my DIY LED fixture. Once done I'll have more picture but for now I'm just running a couple of T5s which is sufficient. THe remaining T5 spaces are going to be used for Euroaquatics E5 lamps when I can get my hands on some!

image.jpeg

So the tank is cycled and ready for live stock thanks to this stuff which I'm super impressed with. Its the MarinePure CerMedia Which I cycled in a bucked with some biosprira in just a few days.

As for adding livestock to the tank, some corals have been transferred to see how they do but not ready for any fish to go in yet, I'm still establishing quarenteen procedures before I transfer what I have and before purchasing new fish. My real aim with this system is to keep nasties out! I'll have an update in my quarenteen setup once I've got it up and running properly!

Been moving along nicely over the last couple of weeks, have got a fair amount done!
image.jpeg

I wanted to establish some decent cable management, quick trip to the hardware store and i found these, so far they have been great! shame they only come in red!
image.jpeg

Now having a way to run and organize cables it was time to bring the Apex online.
image.jpeg

There are some cables that still need to be 'managed' and I think the picture makes it look a lil crazy but it really not! Haha
Everything is also getting labeled, at the request of my wife, incase I'm not around and she has to take quick action which has been the case in the past.

Finally had the acrylic I've been waiting for arrive so that I could finish off my canopy Windows.

image.jpeg

Really happy with the way it turned out. I did managed to scratch/mark so of the wood frame while installing the acrylic so I'll have to repair that.

Managed to order that parts I needed to build my LED strip.
image.jpeg

Time to get building! I'm using a combination of Cree LEDs which I already had from previous projects and this time around after some research I ordered Philips Luxeon LEDs. This is going to be a blue/antinic strip and I have a combination of; Royal Blues, cool blues, cyan and violet with the hope of hitting certain peak wavelengths.

image.jpeg

Im using 1" aluminum tube which I have cut vent holes in the top to allow for better heat escape/cooling. At this time I do not plan add a cooling fan but if it becomes nessecary I will.

image.jpeg

So here's the finished product, all LEDs mounted and soldered. Those with a keen eye will spot there's very few lenses on the LEDs. Reason being is I'm not the greatest fan of lenses and the disco effect they can create. Also the narrower beams of light they can create I find can be very focused and not the most beneficial. ***please note these are my views and opinions, please don't ridicual me for them****;) so only half of my royal blue channel has lenses to just penetrate a bit deeper into the tank.

image.jpeg

Strip mounted in the canopy, ready to test.

image.jpeg

The blue channel!

image.jpeg

And what I call the UV channel. All working great now just to take a few weeks to dial it in and see how the corals do.
