Watching a brstv episode and they acknowledge a filter sock is often filled with a bunch of 'pods. They're probably right that the number removed isn't important, but I thought there must be a way...
I thought it would be great if the sock caught the small things (detritus/etc), but left the larger things (pods) in the sump (and back to the display). Then it occurred to me...you have a ton of water flowing into the sock, it'd be plenty to wash off something that got caught on something above the sock. What if you put a screen above the sock so the water flowed from the pipe through a screen at an angle, then to the sock? It would have to be a fairly fine screen, but not too fine. maybe 1mm? maybe 500 micron? that could catch most of the pods, then the detritus would wash into the sock and get caught.
If we had a little frame that held the screen at an angle, a little of the water would wash the pods down the screen and into the sump (away from the socks...depending on your sump layout), and the screen can easily be lifted out during a sock change.

It would probably be a little more noisy as the water goes through the screen, maybe salt creep?

There will be some splash and possibly wet spots around sump.
I generally pull socks, place in bucket and pick off pods and return them to the tank

I use mesh socks inside of felt socks. Mesh catches larger items which makes cleaning the felt socks easy.
Makes sense...
I wonder about just washing the mesh socks in the sump and not really remove them? I know vertext makes a 300 micron sock; seems like that would let most detritus through, so you could just rins the mesh sock in the sump when to replace the felt sock underneath it?
