These things are great, make it so easy to test your salinity. I've always aimed for 35ppt with my refractometer and followed all the salt mixing instructions for that. But low and behold i tested using the hanna and my water and my salinity was 33.2 so obviously my refractometer wasnt very accurate even after calibrating it. I highly recommend a hanna

Only real way to tell is to use one of these to check whatever method you are using to check SG imo.
My refractometer is calibrated before each use. If it seems off and rarely is I double check with this. I also have a swing arm hydrometer that works. Its off but I know where 1.026 is and thats all that matters as it is repeatable and has been every time I use it.
This unit is big. To use it turn off all flow to tank and float it.

@ReefKing101 I‘m with you! For what it‘s worth I’ve had others measure my salinity using their own devices and abilities and we’ve always come in with same numbers. I also calibrate it once every 30 days per Hanna directions.

I did notice its off by 0.1 even when testing the 35ppt solution that was after i calibrated it to so not sure if thats normal or not?

I've used several, and they're all usually pretty close with regular calibration. Something I did a while back was weighed exactly how much salt it took to get to 1.026 in a 5 gallon bucket (with the exact water level at the top of that bucket marked in permanent marker). I went by weight, not by cups, since salt can pack down a bit and make your cup readings less precise. Now I know exactly how many grams of salt to throw into my bucket. If I ever test and it's off a little, I'll probably know to double check/calibrate my salinity checker.
