Worms in new fish

I recently ordered a trio of scissortail dartfish from DD. I found small white strings on the bottom of the qt tank. The biggest fish has been breathing heavily and has lost his appetite but the other two appear to be doing well. I dosed prazi two weeks into the tank. I was thinking of trying to food soak general cure. My question is using the packets, how much do I dose with the food and for how long to treat worms? Also when food soaking can I just mix it in with the food and let it sit before feeding?

Dosing in Food

Stir together the medicated food mix (recipe below) before feeding. Feed the fish once daily as much as they can consume in about 1 minute. Treatment periods will vary but it is recommended to treat for at least a week. This medicated food can be refrigerated or frozen between feedings.

• 1 scoop of medication of choice
• 1 scoop Focus™
• 1 tbsp food (preferably pellets or frozen food)
• A few drops of water if using a dry food

To enhance palatability use with GarlicGuard™ or Entice™.

Got it Added it to a cube of marine cuisine, will let it thaw, mix it, and will feed it for dinner this week. Hopefully the big guy still has enough appetite to consume it and gets better or it prevents the others from getting sick.
I guess the one advantage to having so many tank nightmares is that I now have a pharmacy worthy supply of medications for the fish ;Doctor

On the 11th the 10 days of GC treatment will be done. I don’t think the one fish is going to survive. Still will not eat, barely moves, and belly very sunken . The other two appear to be even more active than before treatment. Maybe because they had worms and are feeling better... Not sure because they didn’t appear sick before. How long do you think I should continue QT them if the one dies to be safe? They will have been in QT 6 weeks on the 16th and that’s usually how long I QT as long as everyone appears healthy.

I'd stop the GC treatment. Humblefish recommends a week of treatment. I'd move out the healthy guys and treat the one that is not eating with antibiotics. I'd consider treating it with Furan2 or Kanaplex, or both at the same time. This often works for fish that have developed internal infections and are not eating. You just don't know how the fish has been treated in the supply chain. Could be all sorts of issues.

So do you think the other two are safe to go to the DT since they are active and eating well? I only have the one tank for QT. I do have furan 2 that I can start for the sick fella. Also, treat the whole tank, the food or both? Sorry about all the questions.

Furan2 is best in the water column. It is absorbed through the fish's skin.
As far as placing them into your DT, you didn't say if you were treating the fish with Copper or CP, prophylactically for Ich/Velvet. But as far as deworming them, sounds like they are good to go.

I know it may come back to bite me one day but I usually don’t prophylacticly treat with CP or copper. I usually observe 6 weeks and if they appear healthy, I transfer them to the DT. Although ich can take a bit to rear it’s ugly head, from what experience I’ve had, velvet usually doesn’t take long to affect the fish.

Maybe treat all 3 fish with Furan to be on the safe side?

This will bite you — many fish like wrasse can go months without showing symptoms of even velvet. Gobies are another common Typhoid Mary.

Good to know. I’ll go ahead and treat QT with furan2 then. Hopefully that’ll help give the sick fish a fighting chance. Once that is finished and the fish is either better or passes away, I’ll treat with copper before adding to the DT. I just hate using copper because the test kits are hard to read and I’m afraid that I’ll either overdose or underdose it. I thought it was pretty safe to observe because in the past it didn’t take long to see if something was wrong after getting a fish. But I don’t want to do anything else to jeopardize the DT if I can help it.

I recommend the Hanna copper checker. 1.75 PPM is easy to maintain since it’s so accurate. I used to shoot for 2.25-2.5 due to the inaccurate kits and my lack of confidence in the results. It’s a game changer!

If you get the Hanna (I recommend also) make sure to buy extra reagents as it only comes with 6 I believe. The reagents are cheap.

Thanks for the advice! I’ll get on BRS and order the Hanna today. By the time it is delivered the furan treatment should be close to being finished. What kind of copper do you use with it? Coppersafe or Cupramine? I have both handy
