Worried about new Maxima

Hi All:

I took delivery (Friday) of a blue maxima (5"). I placed him on a rock on the sandbed, and surrounded that rock with a few others in case the claim tipped over.

Before doing so, I temperature acclimated (20 mins) and then drip acclimated (45 mins). I rotated him to allow any air bubbles to escape.

He is open A LITTLE, and has not yet attached his foot.

If I wave in front of it, he recedes and then opens a little again.

Am I being impatient, or should he have attached and opened up by now?

Clams tank awhile before they become comfortable with a new tank. As long as the mantle is not receding and the foot is not damaged then the clam should be fine. Also, clams like alot of light.

So tomorrow will be 6 days. My clam is still not opening much — I can see a little of the mantle, and I do see him close of a fish swims too close. By now, should he be fully open, or is there still hope that he’s getting used to his new home?

What are you tanks parameters? As long as the clam is still reacting to movement then there's hope.

So it's now been 14 days. Not only has his foot not attached, he is still only showing a little of the mantle. He still does react if something gets close.

My parameters are:

Ca: 450
Alk: 7
Mg: 1300
N03-.64 (I know it's high I have been fighting Nitrates forever)
P04:- .36
Iodine: .03

I have 3 Radions about 13" above the water.

I dose NoPox and AcroPower.

At this point, he doesn't seem happy where he is. I'd try moving him to higher lighting. I've had maximas that are just not interested in opening until they get hit with enough light. You ideally want him in high SPS range, 250-350+ PAR.

High Nitrate/Phosphate is actually a + for clams, they like dirty tanks.

Don’t feel bad I have a thriving sps tank and couldn’t keep one alive.

Stick you hand in the tank and tap the clam and see if it reacts. If it doesn't then remove it from the tank and move on.

It does react. If I move my hand over it or if anything swims by.
