I love the look of the red & green blastos. Found a colony with approx. 8 polyps of good size for less than 100. Still too new to this, is it a good purchase or no? I'd like to add pieces that I can eventually frag later that people would actually want. Thanks :)

Not a bad price IMO. You can also buy frags and let it grow out so if you do lose them its not so much of a loss.

Check ebay. A sponsor here austinaquafarms has some on ebay right now for 2.00. Type in search aaf and category pet supplies.

I too love the colors of these corals. Rather pricey in my opinion, and you should have bright lights and good flow.

What kind are they are they Blasto merletti's or blasto wellsi's. Wellsi's are usually more $$ and merletti's can usually can be found cheap. Either will grow Very slow so look forward to a long growout.

8 polyps is far from a colony. Green/Red is about the most common colors that these come in. IMO, $100.00 is way too much to pay, for an 8 polyp frag.

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the responses and they are wellsi. Colony vs Polyp - Sorry still learning all the lingo. Just for future reference for me, is there a certain number that makes a colony rather than frag or does it vary depending on coral type?

I've decided against this particular piece but did pick up a few that I like the looks of. I'm not looking to grow things out just to frag them later, least I think thats the correct wording? But, obviously once things would grow out I'd like the ability to trade with friends etc... I'm more into what looks nice in our tank as well as learning the names. Since some, from what I've been reading are worth more than others I just like to know when I'm getting a good deal etc... Doesn't everyone when they buy something! :) Anyway, would like to know more about what I just got. Are they special or average to those who collect corals and are there any special names for them? I'm aware of their care etc... Just seems like some have more given names other than their given formal names by those that trade them and such so I'd like to hear them. Anyway here they are, I'm excited to have a bit more color in the tank! Sorry too - I know the pics stinks. Both the camera and I are far from spring chickens. lol

I have a beautiful Blast colony that I bought about a year and a half ago, started with 10 heads and ended up with 40-50, I cut it in half and sold 20ish heads for $30 about a month later I looked them up and found out I way under priced it LOL but I will do it again in about a year. Just my way of fragging; always give somebody more than they pay for. I do this for multiple reasons, mostly because I HATE speck frags, and also if I have a tank crash I know where I can go to get my corals back :D and likely to get a good price too ;)

I would check local forums if you're in a reef club. Also, here on r2r we have a trading forum. Might try and work them into a deal somehow?

Thats it exactly. I've had a few people that were kind enough to actually give us corals when we first set up the tank under that very same philosophy and guaranteed, if they were ever unfortunate enough to have their tank crash or lose a piece that they had given us a frag of I'd gladly do the same for them. It isn't the cost for me but at that same time I want to learn, be informed enough to make good decisions on what I do buy and know that I'm getting decent deal. Thanks Floridareef thats another thing that I hadn't thought of and will check out. :)
