I have an overpopulation of asterina stars and I am thinking about getting a pair of Harleys (and feed chocolate chip stars once the asterina's are gone, or pass them on in my reef-club). The asterina's been bugging my zoas, killing some of them

Before I spend $30 each on the harlequins, I want to make sure they'll be OK in my tank, if the risk is great, I'll find another means to remove the stars

75g tank

Stock:
2 clowns
Bristletooth Tang
Flame Hawkfish (Trouble?)
Flame Wrasse
Hoevens Wrasse
Leopard Wrasse
Pylei Wrasse
Coris Wrasse
Starry Blenny
2 Dartfish
Foxface

Coral Banded Shrimp (Trouble?)
2 urchins
1 bulb nem

If you do not think that the flame hawk or coris would attack them, then the Harlequins are no threat to anything other than starfish.

I have had harlequins in with Faries, Flashers and most Halichoeres wrasses with no issues. The Coris genus are on another level... especially when they get larger.

My money is on the flame hawk going after them, especially if they are tiny harlequins. Personally, I wouldn't risk it and would try extensive manual removal and see if that puts a sizeable dent in the population of asterina stars, or find something to do with the hawkfish.

thanks. my sump is small, thought about putting the hawk in there for a while.

I guess I'll keep pulling manually

If I were in your shoes I just buy 1 harlequin. With those wrasses there is high risk he won’t survive the first day.
Do you have any shrimp in the tank?

I have a 5 line wrasse that killed all species of shrimps.. hundreds in loss. I might have spend the money eating grilled tiger shrimps!

You'll never keep up removing them manually. Introduce the shrimp at night as to not confuse your fish with a feeding.
