too much if I put a photon v2+ 50” on a 90 gallon tank? Was going to do a 48”, but the 50” is only $20 more and can be used on a 60” tank. Would be nice to go ahead and have a bigger light in case I upgrade to a 150 gallon in the near future. Thanks guys!

It won't be too much. The V2 50 is actually not 50" long either ;). The 48 isn't 48". Look on the site but I think the V50 is right at 48, 48.5, 47.5 somewhere in there. I think the V48 is about 46"
If you're using a canopy you'll need to make sure if fits including power cable out.

I used the V2 50" on my 120g 5' DT full of sps corals. Too much... no way! I ran both blues at 90% and white at 40%. Run the green and red as you see fit. It's a great fixture. IMHO it's the best value available in a full control led fixture. This is from back when I started the tank.

I have the 48" and it is actually 43.25. I believe the 50 is the same watts and number of leds they are just spread out more. You may get a little light spilling over but it shouldn't be too bad. As Ron said it is a great light and for the money hard to beat. I know Ron had success running his very high, especially on the blues but I have mine at blues 60% and white at 10% with a little red and green. I run these settings 5 hours per day with a run and run down.
