Would low alkalinity have killed my clams?

I can agree to an extent, as I have probably 60% of my existing tank from Diver's Den... specifically fish. I have had great survival rates with almost everything from Live Aquaria, besides the clams I have purchased (and that elegance that had TWO gall crabs in it ).

Could be bad luck, could be UPS throwing boxes around with no care, could be non-healthy specimens, or my tank just not liking clams.... who knows. But I will be buying my next clam from a LFS so I can physically see it and not base it off a photo.

I was referring to >/= 3" clams by the way, not tiny guys.

Well it was slightly concerning that there is a thread on here dedicated to DD clams not doing well... even with matured systems and experienced reefers and clam enthusiasts.

If someone has 3-4 clams already, and their DD one died, but others are fine... there's really only one conclusion, no.

Very few people post a thread to say yea it went fine.

This is very true, but it's also true that online purchases are more risky.

• Can't observe before purchase except for a picture. (This is where I get off the ride, but I know I'm weird.)
• Can't carry home in 20 minutes using kid gloves.
• Instead the animals have to be subjected to the stress of another round of long distance travel.

I know most folks don't talk about these issues when buying online but they are still factors for any animal that comes from "somewhere else" and must lead to some added degree of mortality.
