Would my UV system work?

Alright, so an old headed reefer with years of experience gave me this advice about UV, and for some reason it got to my brain. So i started this project. How it works is a closed loop system. The pump currently sitting in the sump, because i have no place for it outside the sump. So how it works the pump, sucks water in from my main display, and then goes down, and gets sucked to my uv, and then my uv dumps it back into the display. So basically its the same setup as having a physical pump inside the tank. I wanted to start the syphon basically by a small siccee pulp with rubber hose is i stick it in the suction part in the tank and get water in. And then start the pump. Would that work? People are telling the syphon would fail because physics. I really want to know before i start the system
