I maintain my temperature using an Apex, a heater and a fan. At first I was a complete control freak, keeping the temp between 77.8 and 78.2. I loved looking at the graph of temp compared to heater and fan on/off cycles.

As I matured a little bit in the hobby and read up on the topic, I relaxed my constraints and now my temp fluctuates between 77.5 and 78.5.

I tend to keep my house cool in the winter and warm in the summer in order to save on energy bills. That means that my tank is working to cool itself via the fan in the summer and heat itself using the heater in the winter. I could save on tank-related energy if I set up my Apex with a broader temperature range such as 75-80.

In theory, the temp would hover around 75 in the winter months when the house is cool, with the heater coming on for a fixed period any time the temp got down to 75. In the summer, the temp would hover around 80, with the fan coming on to cool it whenever it hit 80.

So, the temp would be maintained in a narrow band in the winter and in the summer, but the bands would be different.

Would this be considered "stable" temperature? Does anyone else do this? What are the lower and upper limits of the temperature range that you use?

I use a controller connected to heater and chillers (fan for smaller tank). I do Celsius but I'll convert for you and majority that will read. I have it set between 25C(77F) and 27C(80.6F). It's probably the most I'm comfortable with but I do like tanks filled with sticks so stability is pretty important to me.

I'd say try and see what happens it's not gonna be a massive shock so I would assume any negative change would be a gradual one and something you could fine tune to find what your limits of comfortability and tank stability are

What I envision is keeping the tank in a tight temperature range (79-80) during the summer and a tight range (74-75) in the winter with a controlled, 1 week transition between the two.

I have wondered about this also because we keep our home temps similar to you. I would like to keep my reef a little cooler in the winter so the heaters aren’t constantly on. Right now I have it set at 77.5 but wonder if a degree cooler would work fine?
