hi ..im king from tx..im starting a 120gallon...4x2x25in..I want it a wall to wall sps tank..Now i have a few 400watt mh..now i have one over it now..An i want to hang the 2nd one..Would it be to much light or am i good..Now im also going to put 2 t5 48in blues..on in front an 1 in back..now would i need 2 in front an back or is the 1 ok..
any info is good..thanks.

Cant say for sure but I think it might be overkill. I had 2 150 watt mh over my 120g and everything grew fine. Plus you need to be careful with the heat. . I had them 12" above the tank with an open canopy and still noticed the temp increase. Ended up switching to T-5's and put an end to that

ya.i was thinking about the heat as well..i was going to have an over hang canopy..dont know if that will help..but with 1 400 on right now its been at 77..

Ive never been a huge halide guy but I doubt your gonna get 4' of coverage with one. People put 3 on a 6' tank all the time so I would say its about right. SPS love a lot of light but dont like a drastic change in light. If your adding a second 400 bulb to existing SPS tank I might use some window screen and slowly acclimate them to the new light, a shortened photo period can also help. When you go with halides, heat is always gonna be an issue but there are lots of people that wouldn't run an SPS tank without them.

The tank I'm in the process of setting up (65gal) will have 2 250w Radiums. Bhamr6 had the same exact setup with amazing growth. If you figure it up that's more watts per gallon than what your wanting. I think it will be fine, just expect lots of evaporation. You could always do a chiller if you water starts boiling.

I would agree. I think running 2-250 watts will be more than enough

thanks for the info..will iv always see pics of nice sps reef tanks an i didnt want the 5yr plan..lol i just got the tank up an ckl..to set up i had 1 an to day i just put some frags in..it has one 400watt..AN one mp40....was thinking on setting up the other an a other mp40..

2 lights would be good as long as you can find some way to deal with the heat. I have a 180g sps tank with 2 250mh over it and about to add a third because I need more light.

I had two 400w bulbs over the same dimension tank for about 9 years. I had a hanging canopy that had fans blow between the lights & the water surface when the lights came on. Heat was never an issue for me & I never used a chiller.

You don't need the T5's.............there are enough full spectrum bulbs available to fit just about any taste. I preferred the 12k reeflux.

Wow 2 450's, how was your light bill and water evaporation

thanks guys..an the reason for the t5 i was looking for the dusk till don look. an the blue tent.but ill look in to the 12kreeflux..i have 20k on them now but they are a yr old..so ill b getting new 1s..
man i just changed out my carbon..( just in socks in sump) an the hole dam tank is gray..i washed it out but man its ugly..
o an ill b hanging 2 400watts

Evaporation was maybe 2.5g day max...........less in the summer spring months

I used electronic ballasts that pulled 383 watts per ballast 8 hours a day = $11 a month

I'm not a fan of the dawn/dusk.............I just had bulbs full on or off.
