so im dealing with a really loud overflow into the sump . im wondering if i dont let the water splash into the sump but run an extension onto the pvc and run it down below water level in the sump would it hurt anything or cause it to not run correctly.

You can do that there just might be a little salt creep to deal with. Or just add a sock.

Take a piece of PVC pipe same size as your drain pipe and submerge it into your sock area, eliminates all noise I promise

Here's what I've done which has effectively removed all sound... Like he said, a piece of PVC in the filter sock and I added a cap with a small hole drilled into to allow more air which allows water to flow more freely.

I have my over flow running into a diy bubble defuser that goes all the way under the water and it works well to control turbulence in that chamber for my skimmer, probes, etc. while staying quite. Ran my 1"pvc overflow an inch or two under the water line into a piece of 1 1/2" pvc that I capped at the bottom which sits on the bottom of my sump and drilled a bunch of holes down its sides which allow incoming water to be pushed out under water silently and without bubbles.
