I figured I'd ask the science folks...

I'm considering buying a couple uranium glass vases for each side of my frag tank (outside the tank). I wonder if they'd glow, like they do under UV, but instead under my AI Prime.

I can't stop thinking about this idea, as it would complement my glowing green acrylic frag racks, NYC tapesty, and overall look fantastic- but only if it glows!

Will it glow?

You need UV light for the compounds in the glass to become excited and give off the photons (glow) so if you run UV on the Prime and I'm betting you do, it should glow. The other wavelengths won't excite the photons so the reds, greens, etc. won't counteract it or stop the glowing. What I cannot tell you, is how much that uranium glass glow will be drowned out by the background light from the tank.

what a neat question! I decided to give it a try... the results are pretty lackluster... Photo A is my uv pen lighting up a spot, photo B is the kessil A360WE set to blue only. the blues quickly wash out any hint of glow from UV I also tried it with blues and my UV channel from my homebrew LED boxes. once the blue light hits it it ruins the cool UV glow.
Edit: added a photo of how the blues wash out any UV glow.
Hope this helps.

NOT ALL URAIUM GLASS IS THE SAME. IVE GOT PEICES THAT MELT YOUR EYES AND THEN RIGHT NEXT TO IT A PEICE THAT DOESNT GLOW TO MUCH...

heres a couple, the 2nd and the 4th one glow much more than the 1st and 3rd. I know itds hard to see in the pick but the 2nd and the 4th one look crazyyyyy

OOPS CAPs.

I think you're onto something here. I see it does glow 2/4 of them and only one looking real good. I assume it was glowing somewhat intensely, given it's visible under the blues. Apparently I need some gene-altering irradiated decor .

Thanks for the input and special thanks to those who tested it. I wasn't sure if anyone would reply, but apparently we reef keepers enjoy our colorful glowing stuff all the same.

Part of this equation is whether or not your particular lighting set up has any of the UV spectrum, mine does not, clearly some folks do have a little. It also depends on the concentration of uranium that was added to the glass when it was made as to how brightly it glows, (among other factors I am sure) not all of it is the same.

Regardless, congratulations on your two new Uranium glass vases, it’s really intriguing stuff and a personal favorite of mine.
