At work we have large plastic barrels of Ethylene Glycol. Once they are used we return the barrels and get credit on our next order. I was curious if the barrels could be cleaned and used as water storage and mixing containers?

Interesting question. I personally would not risk it.
I don't know anything about Ethylene Glycol, but from a risk perspective water barrels are cheap relatively so why risk everything in the tank to save just a couple or few hundred

agree ,don't risk it,pick up holding tanks,do not ship them 2x cost, most farm and garden and tractor supply have them in stock :)

My mixing barrel is a 55g drum that was originally used for either Developer or Fixer for Xray film. I rinsed it well, washed it with some baking soda, then a little vinegar, rinsed with fresh again and put it in service. That was in 1988 or 89. If something was going to happen, I would think it would have by now.

If you clean the barrel thoroughly it is probably safe to use. As others have said, however, there are other, possibly better, alternatives. I can get food safe barrels from a place all of a mile from here for $10ea. Check craigslist.
