The driver wouldn't let me examine the tank because he didn't want to wait, and after I opened the crate I saw this:

I can see the wall on the other side of the tank thru that air gap

Tank is IM EXT 50 lagoon. I've emailed IM to ask if this is safe to fill but I haven't heard back yet. Am I being paranoid and this is "normal", or should I be concerned? On the one hand I can see that this would cause stress in the glass with part of it being supported more than the other when full, and on the other hand, the foam could just compress and provide support evenly enough to not be a concern.

Which is it?

Maybe worth emailing the seller, then if they say it’s ok you have some comeback.

My guess is that 400 lbs of water will compress that down, it is a levelling mat but I do see your concern.

I know there are some tank builders on the forum, maybe someone can tag them to comment.

IM responded:

"Thank you for your email, we appreciate you sharing this with us. We see this once in a while, no need to worry. The aquarium is safe to use, the mat will compress with the weight of the water and level everything out for you. Feel free to contact us with any additional questions you may have. Thank you for your time, Have a Great Day!"

so I'm gonna consider this good to go.

Well when the truck driver says no, next time, and for anyone else, refuse delivery and call the truckers manager/company.

Truck drivers need an attitude check sometimes. That’s why they drive a truck, can’t function in a corporate environment.

That wasn't necessary this time, IM called me when they shipped it and told me if the driver couldn't wait for me to examine it, to just write on the slip and they would work with me after if there were any problems.

This defect doesn't really give the me "wow" feeling, but the rest of the tank is built way nicer than the tanks of the past for sure, and I'm not going to look at it once is has sand in it. They've assured me it is safe, so if it does leak, that's on them.

EDIT:

I also just want to say that I didn't get the impression the driver had an attitude, he seemed nice and the way he got the crate off the truck was impressive and gave me confidence he took care of my crate. I could see his truck was still half full and it was later in the day, and I live kinda out in the middle of nowhere. I wasn't happy he said he couldn't wait, but I can see why he did.

I bought a tank from IM and it came cracked. It was in the back glass panel. The black acrylic hid the cracks. The cracks were not visible, but upon closer inspection, were visible with a flashlight. IM was awesome and sent me a new tank. It took a while due to Covid and the riots , but the next one was delivered and the driver was very patient while I went over it with a flashlight and a magnifying glass
