Getting ready to start the plumbing on my new build (finished stand pics posting later today). Just wanting some feedback on running a fuge and algae reactor together. Would you do it out would it be overkill?

Ahhhhhh
Why not start with the fuge and see how it goes but keep the layout able to accommodate the reactor.
How heavy of a bio load you planning on?

I usually get 2 to 3 cubes a day plus nori for the tang and phytoplankton but my nitrates are always high. I'm going from a 75 gallon to a 125 gallon.

Define high? I can't see that it would hurt except to potentially drop you to 0. That's never good.

They range from 40 to 50 ppm all the time. Right now I just have the fuge and skimmer. I've tried Chaeto twice and both times it thrived then died. I haven't gotten this part down yet.

Isn't an algea reactor basically the same as a fuge? Or does it grow a different algea? Have you thought about a turf scrubber?

I haven't but I'll look into it. I think they are basically the same so that's why I'm wondering if it would be over kill!

I don't think it would be overkill at all just a bit redundant. Id spring for a bigger fuge tbh but its all up to you!

I'm running a small ats and chaeto reactor on my 120gal. My no3 is between 0-1ppm.
My problem with fuge is light spilling over and algae/coraline starts growing in my skimmer and reactors.

A macro fuge and algae reactor are essentially redundant, unless you cannot allocate enough space to the former. Typically they are both growing chaeto. ATS is growing turf algae. They all serve essentially the same purpose though.

Thanks. I agree but didn't want to miss something I wasn't thinking about. Like copepods. I'm thinking of doing the fuge to have a growing place for them.

They all serve same nutrients export function from growing algae. Fuge has added benefit of providing "refuge" (hence name) for other organisms. Ie, growing out pods, temporary prison for naughty inverts, growing out other filter feeders (ie, feathers, tube worms, etc).

Of the three, its the most "wholistic" form of biofiltration.
