I have had my madarin for over a year. Took frozen and was a great tank mate. I noticed late yesterday that he had a scratch on his side and below it was some pretty bad discoloration. I added a starry blenny about 2 months ago and haven't seen any aggression from him towards anything. He ticks off my leather by perching on it, but other than that nothing else. Anyways I found my CUC on my mandarin this morning. It broke my heart. Been in fish keeping for 20+ years and the mandarin dragonet is the main reason I made the change to salt. My tank is loaded with pods and he was my favorite. The attached pic is of his wound. Help me out...is it the starry? To me I would think his fins would have been shredded or if the wound was bite marks they would look like half moons.

Kind of hard to tell for certain. Definitely has the appearance of a bacterial infection.

My guess from what can be seen is an injury turned bacterial infection.

Sorry for your loss :(

I have a Starry in QT right now, and that is one mean little SOB. Constantly nipping at the tails of the firefish. So, it wouldn't surprise me if yours bit the mandy and the wound got infected. Sorry for your loss. :(
