Sad. Looks to be they were illegally harvested. This article is from Oct 30, 2019 and I didn't see any stories on this before I was just surfing the web today. Amazing number of shells in the video.

Nothing they have not found them there was no one there. You should watch the video it look like a mountain

I was meaning what gain did the harvesters get from killing the clams, not what punishment.

100 tons, if correct, means this didn't happen over night and clearly an on going operation. The zone they are pulling from would have showed signs be it a local or fisherman. Something isn't adding up.

Then again as I always say this sort of activity will always be happening and you won't be able to stop it. People need to eat. Eat means they need to earn money. Some places earning money is easier. Others not so much. Then there are just the crappy people who choose the path of least resistance and take what they can and be lazy about it.

Regardless sad.

Sorry, but my browser craps out on the given link, and I don't know where the referenced clam shell graveyard is located.

But here's a reality check for you...

Most of the clam farms in the pacific supply the Japanese sushi market and other human food needs. Those food clams aren't the pretty colored ones that are sent to markets for reef keepers. They are the ugly brown ones that can't be sold to reef keeper markets, because you and I wouldn't buy them. I don't recall any real numbers, but I'd guess 90+% of farm raised clams wind up as food for people, and I don't see anything sad about feeding humanity.

If you really want to "SAVE THE CLAMS", start a movement where you, and your fellow clam lovers, swear to buy all the ugly clams that come your way. When that fails, maybe you should seek out an on-line economics course that clearly presents the concepts of "supply & demand"...

Well ppl kill lion fish en masse in Florida to irradiate them from the Atlantic Ocean(and are readily available in Whole Foods), people in Hawaii munch down on some sohal tangs, puffers are a delicacy in Japan, clams are actually delicious as well, yet reefers pay ridiculous amounts of money to keep them in a tank and cry over them being killed? I don’t get it. Are we that sheltered from real life?

The article states it was an illegal operation and not a clam farm.

Thanks for the reality check about a story and video you can't even open.

A few years ago I took a long vacation and went to the French Polynesia . I remember on Huahine the locals were harvesting the most beautiful Maxima clams I've ever seen and to my horror I would see them hollow out the beautiful mantle and discard the rest like an apple core. I found a 4'x4' pile of shells in the woods. Also in Mo'orea I saw a child catching Mourish Idols like perch and throwing them on the shore to die. Unfortunately I don't speed French to talk to him about his catch. To them these creatures are nothing more that steak and potatoes. But when you are on these islands you take whatever food you can get, and I must say it was the best sashimi I've ever had. Hey! when in Rome!

I understand that stuff like this happens to plenty of other animals like lions. I just feel less bad about that because the lions weren’t supposed to be there in the first place and they are killing native species. This wouldn’t be so horrible to me if the clams were causeing problems.
