I notice my Melanurus Wrasse got bloated right after eating 2 days ago so I watched her for about an hour. She pooped and her stomach went to a normal size. Yesterday the same thing. Today again. But now, about 3 hours later she's still bloated a bit. I also noticed her opening her mouth wide from time to time and hanging out in a high flow area in the tank. My 2 Fire Gobys are acting the same. Swimming next the the wrasse in the high flow area. I also noticed my devils hand molting. He did this before, just when I moved him into my tank but has been very strong and grew fast.
My Tank and livestock:
Its a new tank. 55 gallons about 5 months old. I have a Current 48" Freshwater LED. I also bought a 6 bulb t5 fixture but the corals seem to be doing fine with the LEDs, so I dont want to change too much right now. I have a single 970 gph powerhead. I did by another 500 gph PH but I noticed the tank is just right with the one. No dead spots at all and no stress to the fish. I'm using a canister filter that has been established for about 2 years (bought used) i ran the filter with the tank empty for 3 months. Then add 40 pounds of live rock from a good friend that had it for about 3-4 years. I also added a pencil urchin, devils hand and a couple snails. The 2 Fire Gobys and the Wrasse were added at the same time, about 3 weeks to a month ago. I also added 3 frags 2 days after the fish. (Didn't dip them) Then added 3 more frags about a week later. Those I did dip.
Feeding:
I have been feeding the fish 1/4 cube of frozen brine shrimp once a day around noon. I also daily feed the corals by dripping 6-10 drops of Oyster Feast. And usually adding Reef Roids weekly. That is partially spot feed. But I think Im going to stop the Reef Roids as the devils hand doesn't seem to like it.
Parameters:
I only have the API saltwater kit. So I did what I could.
Ph-7.8
Ammonia- 0.0
Nitrites- 0.0
Nitrates- 5.0
Other Notes:
I am not skimming at all. Just 10% weekly WC. This system is temporary. I'm setting up a 75DT/40 sump which everything will be switched over.
I do have an ASM G2 skimmer in a 10 gallon sump and the tank is plumbed with a siphon overflow. But the pump that was given to me failed after about 20 min. I do have another pump to be delivered in 5 days, so I'll at least be able to skim the tank.
I also am battling Cyanobacteria. This came with the Oyster Feast. I haven't stopped feeding with the Oyster Feast because the corals seem to Really like it. I have been vacuuming the rock and sand when I do my WC and that seems ok. I also peel it off the sand in places where its heavy.
Also, just to mention. My Pencil Urchin eats the red slime left from the Cyanobateria.

Please let me know what you guys think.
I forgot to add that the temp is 79*.
Sorry for the typo in the title guys..lol

Thanks!
David

My melanurus wrasse gets bloated from being a pig and then tries to eat large pieces of mysis meant for my anemone and get way more than he eats and then swims around the tank doing the open mouth thing. Yours might be a parasitic issue though and you may want to set up a quarantine system where you can medicate them and such.

Brine shrimp isn't very nutritious either, you may want to try some mysis or get some mixed food such as rods food or LRS reef frenzy. You want to feed your fish a variety of stuff too to help them stay healthy. I feed mine mysis and LRS nano reef frenzy every other day with a high quality flake food in between.

The skimmer may help with the cyano too by taking excess proteins and nutrients out of the water column.

Thanks for the help. I did get some veriety of foods for them. I definately got some mysis shrimp, as it seems Everyone talks about them as a staple of a diet. I also added krill for a treat. Im still looking for the others you mentioned. I may need to order them.

Ok. I did notice some other things swimming in the tank. I'll post a new tread as I it is a little off the topic of my wrasses' belly being bloated.

I'm no expert, but I have 2 citron gobies that are total pigs, so much so their bellies stretch to onion skin thinness and you can see all the food in their beer belly like stomach. The wife and I concluded that these two just don't posses that switch in their head that says "I'm full". All the other fish will eat, but stop when they are full. Maybe your wrasse is like our gobies??
