hi guys,

I have a melanarus wrasse in my tank and have been offered a leopard wrasse to add to the tank. I have done a lot of reading and there are pro's and cons for putting the two together.
Both are the same size.

Anyone got any thoughts before I decide.

thanks

I would say they're okay. IME melanarus wrasses are pretty peaceful and I know people who keep them with the yellow wrasses in frag tanks for pest control. I've found leopard wrasses to be a bit shy, so I honestly doubt you will have conflict unless a small tank. How big is your tank?

I have a melanurus, ornate, orange back, cloud and 3 different leopard wrasses and they all hang together with no issues

I have 3 Halichoeres wrasses including a melanurus with a Potter's leopard wrasse, 3 fairy wrasses and 2 flasher wrasses with no aggression at all. Agree that you should always use an acclimation box just in case but I bet you'll be fine if your tank is appropriately sized.

thank you...I feel a lot happier now.

I have a mated pair of Melanie's which was in the tank prior to leopards. Now have melragris, ornatus pair and had bipartitus as well with no aggression from Melanie's. An older Melanurus nipped on clams wh egg n he got hungry and had to be removed.

BTW if u end up using a new acclimation box it'll need a sand box in it for leopard to sleep in.

They should be fine together, though definitely use a social acclimation box to introduce a new wrasses to an established one.

I recommend against sand in a social acclimation box, as the new wrasses will get used the lighting schedule of the dt sooner and won't be in the acclimation box for too long.

ok...as this is 4th time a reply has mentioned an acclimation box....I have to ask (please don't shout at me) why would I use one ??

In case the individuals dont get along. The new fish will still be in there and if they seem to fight through the plastic/glass then you know its probably a good idea to bring him back to the LFS. It is a good idea but not necessary. In the past I've noticed you will see possible aggression issues while floating bags of new fish.

ah right...understood. I thought it was to acclimatise the fish. I am getting the wrasse from a friend who provides me with all my water so I know that both tanks are compatable...
