I'm planning on upgrading to a 120 gallon bare bottom sps tank but I wanted to bring along my yellow corris wrasse from my current setup. The only way I think it would work out is if I provide some kind of sand bed for the guy. Does anyone have experience with wrasse dens and if they work out long term?

here are some examples of what I'm trying to get.

IMO this won’t work and you NEED a sand bed or even a pot of sand in the corner will work. Any reasons why you don’t want a sand bed?

acro tank. i want lots of flow and want to clean detritus easily. also i kinda like the look.

how is a pot of sand different than a wrasse den? is the hole too small? i just want a nicer alternative than just a plastic container full of sand.

From my experience with wrasses......

When spooked they dive straight to the sand, without a sandbed, when spooked they will bounce off the bottom of the glass and injure their jaw. I have used a dish in QT, but they often times do not find it.

A dish like the top pic would be my choice if I was to do it, but I would not have sand sleeping wrasses without a sandbed. IMO

Aggressive to other wrasses, go for a pink streak or a Cirrhilabrus depending on what you want.

My personal experience, 4.5" Melanurus Wrasse (almost maxed now, started small), going on 4 years in the tank now, bare bottom, not a fancy bowl but just a coralline encrusted 60 oz. Pom pomegranate juice plastic bottle tucked down in the back corner. Wrasse is thriving.

I found that this hourglass shape helps to keep the stirred up sand in the container as the wrasse dives in and out of his bed.

i thought about the same thing for my wrasse(same wrasse), but i rather it have options rather than forced to one area/cave for it to sleep.

I had aquarocks build me a wrasse den and my melanarus slept in it everynight . Its sitting outside right now since um not using it. Sands obviously spills out of it but works and it's not Tupperware. You can PM I'll send you pics

If you don't want sand choose different wrasse that don't need sand.
Sand sleeping wrasse absolutely need sand. It's thier home and comfort. With out they will be stressed.

Yea but I hear in a 120 they tend to be less aggressive plus it would be the only wrasse in the tank and put in last or second to last
Even in larger tanks, they can still have that pot brisk as they age. I personally wouldn’t risk it anyway as they will possibly kill other rock dwelling fish.
