Hi, I am new to R2R. I have a 1800 gallon 2 year old system. One month ago my husband bought a wrasse for me from our lfs. After a 1 month quarantine he has been introduced to the DT. He was sold by the lfs as a melanarus wrasse. I have a peaceful system. I am concerned because to me he looks so much like a lunar wrasse. I am certainly not a wrasse expert. I love all wrasse but can't risk a lunar in my peaceful system if he was misidentified.

Yikes. He is so active and pretty. $50. Sold as a melanarus which is what I wanted. I have heard horror stories about lunar wrasse aggression. I don't want him to kill my Clarkii, yellow coris or leopard wrasse.

the aggression is kind of a fish to fish thing, they do have personalities after all, but my store once had one that couldn't be kept with anything. Keep an eye on him and see how he does with other fish. However you did get ripped off in terms of price. If you want to you could try to return him. They honestly shouldn't go for much more than 35 dollars

The guy in the lfs which is an awesome store told my hubby it is a melanarus in juvenile coloration, had him labeled as such.

I am going to call tgen tomorrow. He sure won't be fun to catch. There us another small store close to us that has a 7 inch melanarus, gorgeous but evil. He killed a huge angel and they can't even keep him with a big eel.

this is what a juvenile and what an adult looks like

If you really like this guy you could try getting a partial refund to what they would charge for a lunare wrasse if you really like this guy.
It honestly may not be completely the guys fault, sometimes fish come in mislabeled although lunare's are super common and I'm surprised he wouldn't know what one looked like, but the store also probably got charged by the vendor for melanurus instead of a lunare and want to make a profit on it.

Like i said they have personalities. I wouldn't risk going for that guy.

Lunare wrasse.

Thank you. For the information and help and pics. I don't mind. It was the tail and stripes on his face. It reminded me of the crazy one at the other store. Great fish, gorgeous but super mean. I'm pretty sure it's not a good mix with the leopard and yellow coris.

You say you want a peaceful system but you have clarki clowns and domino damsels. Correct me if I'm wrong but they can both get pretty mean.

good luck with dealing with the store, hopefully they will take it back, and hopefully you can catch the little guy

These guys have always been nice. The domino are not long term as they were Inherited from someone moving.
