I bought this wrasse that was supposed to be a filamented flasher but it certainly does not look anything like a filamented flasher wrasse. Does anyone know what kind it could be? Or is it possible it's just a young female filamented?

When female/juvenile they look so similar I cannot tell them apart. Filamented and Carpenters have more than one “spike” on the dorsal fin which I believe I see in the middle photo.

With one I’d say mccosker but it’s so hard to tell at that stage. We have two resident wrasse supernerds I will tag them both :)

I wish I could get a better picture... I will certainly try but it literally never stops moving and doesn't flash often. But yea it looks sort of like a mccosker to me

Looks like an early transitional carpenters, but when it dwvelops further it will be easier to tell for sure.

If it is not a filamented I think I'm just going to take it back to the store. I already have a mccosker. So in your opinion it is most likely not a filamented? Once it goes in my DT I doubt I'll ever get it out.

It is definitely not a filamented, the tail is the wrong shape. This is either carpenters, lineopunctatus, mckoskers, or flavianalis, though I lean toward carpenters.

Yeah, it's definitely not a filamented. It's either carpenteri, mccoskeri, or flavianalis.

That's my hunch as well right now. Pretty sure I see the stub of more than one filament, so that would rule out mccoskeri.
