I have an ornate leopard wrasse that I got in 2016 that was already male. Last night it did not bed in the sand, this morning he’s on his side dying. Yesterday he was out eating been active no aggressors. This is the first fish I got for this system, it went through a week long power outage with water temps in the 50s. I’m bummed he’s dying and looking for validation that it’s old age. Anybody know the life expectancy for Ornate Leopard Wrasse?

This will vary. Depends on:
Initial age of fish
Water conditions
Overall health of fish
Diet
Stress level

Fish was definitely full male when I got him almost 5 years ago. Tank is peaceful, I can keep SPS alive, fish ate well, home prepared fresh food, fat healthy hunting all the time and seemingly healthy.

I have had a few leopard wrasses die at the 5-6 year mark. Usually, the fish begins to lose weight until it is very thin and then either does not have the energy to bury itself or failed to emerge from the sand. Absent any other likely cause, I have chalked them up to old age. Lost this one a few months ago, almost 5 years to the day of getting it off DD.
