Wrasse Resort

I keep finding all these "non reef safe wrasse" that I like
Got names? Some sites list wrasse as non reef safe when all it means is small inverts will be eaten.

It’s the same over here, it’s either they’re too aggressive/not reef safe or they’re too finicky and can’t stand even the smallest bit of stress. So annoying to find a nice wrasse that falls in between the two. I really am liking pictures of the Tahitian gold… So many “Gold” wrasses that it’s so hard to keep up with them. I’d love to find a rare but not a newly discovered wrasse to go with. Gold Nuggets are nice but it’s the fish everyone’s getting and I’d rather not jump on a finicky fish if it’s not been in the LFS for Atleast a week.
What's a "Tahitian gold"?

I would love a bird wrasse, I saw a beautiful twinspot at the lfs today as well as a really pretty timor.

I already can't have small inverts because of my marine betta, so i'm not concerned in terms of that.

Then that opens the door quite a bit for "not reef safe" wrasses.

I forgot the name of it but had to look up “Tahitian Gold Wrasse” to find it haha, I was close but it’s instead Tahitian Gold Flake Wrasse “Labropsis polynesica”

The Timor should be alright, the bird may be more boisterous as it ages. A juvenile/female shouldn’t be too boisterous though! Twinspots I can’t really talk on due to rarely seeing them and selling them quite quickly when I did see them come in.

It's hard to tell if that's the only qualifier for some of them.

I should note: I have a canary that I was sent on accident, he's a monster and throws sand nonstop. A melanurus who is somehow the best behaved fish in the tank... and a dusky.

Never thought a canary would become a sand thrower! I would’ve expected the Melanurus to do that. I’d say go for it though! You never know, even if it’s known for being boisterous you may luck out and have a bit of aggression as they transition but then have that aggression die out over time, this is what’s happened to my Jade’s aggression. He rarely chases the radiant anymore, at this rate it’s just fins up aggression and that’s from the radiant.

Obviously the Jade still gets the name of “Green Beast” possibly going to change it to “Green Death”.

he flicks at the glass and all kinds of things, he's ridiculous... but not aggressive at least

Timor is fine. Bird wrasses are cool, but they're a mixed bag. Some become terrors when mature and will try to eat anything that will fit in their mouth including other fish, but some are good citizens. Twinspots are a hard pass.

Ah yes I believe those are corallivores. Diver's Den used to sell those back in the day. Are they showing up for sale in the UK?

Thanks! I'll consider the timor more closely since it looks like a china is going to be out of the question for me in this area.

I wish they were, unfortunately no, Gold Nuggets are all the rage over here currently. And I’d get one it’s just how they don’t have that rarity part as much now so it doesn’t feel too uncommon/rare to own. Probably going to wait out and see what the next wave of rare wrasse is going to be.

I will be right there with you. I am watching wholesaler lists and plan to get whatever odd ones I can find moving forward lol. Between the nem tank, the macro tank, my 180, my 500, I have room somewhere lol.

Do tell! If you spot some rare ones on the lists PM me. I have a guy that can order me stuff lol

The red headed Halichoeres is a beautiful fish. I was very tempted by that fish on the ReefPros page. Unfortunately my 75 is all filled up wrasse wise (honestly really overstocked), but once the 47 gallon and the 65 gallon are running, I'll pick up a few more. Still need a yellow coris, a few different leopards, and a royal pencil.

I was really tempted by the royal pencil on ReefPros as well, but I'd rather get the pencil and the leopards locally, where I can see them eat and make sure nothing is damaged.

If you can't find one of the delicate wrasses you're looking for locally give Reef Pro a shot. My Kuiter's leopard and feminus wrasse came from them. They arrived in perfect condition and eating.

Do you guys qt your wrasses? Copper?
I do hybrid TTM on all of my fish after observation and they start to eat. Only treat right off the bat if issues. All of my fish also get 2 rounds of prazi and homemade food. Between this and a healthy tank, it makes for a good life for them lol.
