Yes it could be any number of reasons. High trates, temp fluctuations, water chemistry, any alk swings and others. And sometimes things happen for reasons we or nobody else has answers for. Good luck to the OP. Hope you get it figured out.

Just a thought... cleaners only have a lifespan of about 3 years (~2 in wild) maybe 4 if your lucky. That's one reason LFS only sells small ones. When I started this tank I saw a really nice large pair at another LFS and they did well but only lasted about a year. First one died and maybe a couple months later the other. I also have a pair of blood shrimp that were probably mediums and I have had them probably 1.5 yrs now.

Diet I feed:
Brine
Mysis
seaweed extreme pellets small and large
Hikari Marine a and s
Nori sheets (3-4 times a week)
New era (3 times a week in addition to normal feedings)
Ultra soft spirulina
New life spectrum

Pellets I rotate and usually feed as a snack mid day. Nori and new era are also in addition to am/pm shrimp cubes

No they didn't get there mid afternoon snack for 6 days

I'm ok with him dying of old age. Just not into buying nice critters to be eaten again

I think your good with the wrasses. If anything they may eat some hermits like I suspect some of mine have done on occasion. I think I have 9 right now and they have never bothered blood or cleaner shrimp. Plus remember the cleaner is everyone's best friend and most (reef safe) fish instinctively know not to eat the doctor. Even blood shrimp clean and my harem of Tierra Anthias live right there with them and constantly get serviced. Most of the other fish make regular visits and my bigger fish use them and the services of my cleaner wrasse.

Dang I have a blood shrimp I got from LA as part of a bonded pair 3 1/2 years ago. His mate died last year. I also have a skunk cleaner I've had for 3 years. I guess I'll be having to replace them soon!

All these shrimp have lived with a couple of Halichoeres wrasses (6" H. chrysus and a 5" H. chrysotaenia) the whole time
