I have a melanurus wrasse the other day that hide for 2 days I was a little concerned was I know wrasse do that so not big deal. he came out to eat after 2 days then started to lay on the sand bed and breathing fast. some time he does sleep on top of the sand and not dig in.

the next day he would seem ok then an hr later back on the sand bed. upside down.

I just added epson salt 1tbs to 5 gallon of water. he is in a smaller tank as I set up and cycle the big tank (it has taken longer than I thought )
all other fish and RFA are doing fine.

my GF is a vet ( not fish tho) and thinks its a swim bladder or constipation. after reading @Humblefish threads on the issue. we decided to do the epspn slat in tank not to stress the fish out giving it a bath.

oddly I dont have a heater for a small hospital tank all my heaters are large 17"-20" oops so as of now a hospital tank is out. ( no petco with 100 miles each way drive in the snow)

gonna give the salt a go then see if I can treat with GC?
thoughts?

oh the fish is a least 4 years with me so maybe 5-6 years old? know knows... I heard some where wrasses life span are around that time? not that I want it to pass just a thought, and something I wanted to get more info on.

Epsom salt has no effect with salt water fish which are already in salt.
Some things that cause this are:
  • Trauma/Injury
  • Bacterial infection
  • Parasitic infection
  • Stress/rapidly changing water parameters
  • Poor water quality
Maracyn 2 and prazi pro are my choice for treatment

I did not know that. I thought/read the epson salt did work on SW fish?

I see no sighn of trauma or injury. could be bac. or parasitic infection tho. i'll try to get a hospital tank up and running.
I have general cure on hand i'll try that 1st. I might have some old prazi does that expire if I do its a few years old.

I’m thinking internal infection but not ruling out bacteria
