Love them wrasses but they are so jumpy and sometimes faint of heart.
Here’s my Red Fin (rubripinnis), pretty much a super male at 5”, always the bully and boom, spooked himself into what looks like a heart attack this afternoon.

Aww that’s unfortunate, sorry for your loss!

Sorry for your loss. They are so cool looking, yet can be a real pain picking on the other fish. But love me some wrasses.

Sorry to hear about your loss.

It sure is disheartening when we do something we think is a non issue. Then boom something like a shadow or something spooks them.
I went through this a couple weeks prior... reached in my canopy towards the back of the tank to grab my magnet, I use to hold seaweed for my tang. It spooked my super male Isosceles wrasse. He jumped up and hit my T5 reflector and passed away 30 minutes later. The startle and the hard hit did him in. :(

Bought that guy when he was 1.5" so he did grow on me literally and figuratively.
Flashing was amazing, didn't even know it was the same wrasse.
Oh well, now my Lineatus will take over as the dominant wrasse.

Odd this came up today. During morning feeding, I noticed my lineatus was missing, even though I’m pretty sure she had been right there when I emptied the food into the tank. When I noticed she was missing, I started looking around and found her cowering in a corner at the bottom of the tank. A few minutes later, she started moving around and then a few minutes later, I saw her suspended on the other side of the tank, but she looked dazed. I didn’t see her again today, and I fear the worst. I saw no signs of parasites and had originally thought she might have just been bullied by my exquisite. My other thought was that she jumped and either hit a crossbar or hit the base of the Shadow overflow. I also remember hearing a pop yesterday evening coming from the tank room, and I couldn’t figure out what made the noise. It is possible that it was the lineatus hitting something and that I didn’t really see her this morning when I poured the food in.

Not just wrasses ..... anthias are prone to freaking out themselves to death. Quite annoying actually.

To follow-up, this morning after the lights started ramping up, I checked and no lineatus. At my 10:30 am feeding, there she was, and she even ate PE mysis.

I feel your pain...I came home to this today. She knocked off a piece of acrylic that I use for covering. I had her about 4-5 years. Didn’t realize the size of the teeth they have....

Wrasses can spaz out at any random moment. Thus far my juvie Melanurus has been well behaved (had it in two different tanks for about a year), but sometimes it acts just plain goofy. I am probably getting a Leopard Wrasse as well in the next week or two, so we will see how that goes.
