I have heard that you can have TOO MUCH skimmer. That it won't pull anymore nutrients than one that's rated just a little over what you have. But I also think this depends on the skimmer. I have heard that certain Reef Octopus skimmers are underrated for how they perform. But I can't really say if the Cad LIGHTS skimmer will perform this way or not. As far as starving out your corals, I don't think that is a reality when you run ecobak. You can feed your tank super heavy and it doesnt add the typical trates and phates that it would normally. Jon Warner suggests that you feed the tank heavy in order for the ecobak to really work at it's full capacity. And as long as you target feed your corals, I don't think you have to worry about starving them out due to an overrated skimmer.

I would say now, you only have a light to medium bioload. But if you were to go with the CAD lights skimmer, you would be free to load your tank up, and wouldn't have to worry about a new skimmer, if and when you
upgrade the size of your tank.

Ooooh, more fishies

Red Dragon 1500 Pump - Manhattan Reefs
Look at the Huge Difference in Specs on these 2 pumps, Although the Red Dragon is the best IMO the Air/Water Ratios should tell it all.

Huge difference but I only have a 55 gal with 11 small fishes. My bioload is light and I don't wanna have a skimmer that overrated. I think one that is rated for a 120 or so would be ideal for me that can handle the bioload and be efficient enough to take care of my ecobak.

thanks for the info Bill.

I'm also looking into a skimmer. Looking for one that will do about 200 actual gallons. I want something efficient enough to run the ecobak that i can get at the best deal possible. Anyone have suggestions?

The Super Reef Octopus Line of Skimmers W/Bubble Blaster Pumps are for the money a great buy, Plus the pump warranty is 3 years (The best deal out there) I have many friends that have these in different sizes and they all perform excelent. JMO

Do you think the super reef in the 5000 series would be enough?

For 200 gals the 5000 may be more than you need, The 3000 should suffice but if you plan on upgrading in the future or an extremly heavy bioload you will have to make the choice. But realisticly the 3000 is more than enough for 200 gals. JMO

Here's what I have exactly, my display is a 230 and the sump is a fifty. Total water volume is close to 200+- a little. I plan to have a medium bioload and too run ecobak. What would you do? I don't foresee that ill really ever get a tank that's bigger than this.
