Ok, so I'm out of town for a conference currently. I don't have any camera set up to watch my tank but I've considered it.

The real question is:

If you didn't have anyone that could go fix things on your tank when you're out of town, would it be more stress with the camera if you saw something and weren't able to make adjustments or would it be more stress not seeing anything and not knowing if something failed?

No camera and no controllers that send notifications. I don't travel but when I did I had no one to watch the tanks so I took the ignorance is bliss route. Why spoil a trip if I can do nothing resolve a problem that arrises? If I had a reefing buddy or service near by I may have had surveillance.

I use the cameras, that way, I am not constantly thinking about the tank.
Interesting. I feel like if I had a camera setup I'd be thinking about it more than I have been this trip.

But imagine all the pictures you could grab for the Tunze photo bomb contests!

If I could stay sober and post them in the correct thread :rolling-on-the-floor-laughing:

Each person different.
My system is very solid and has automatic redundancies, and safeties, which hopefully will kick in if a problem occurs.
So chances of issues, very small for me.

I'm pro camera, I travel 100-120 days a year. I dont always have a tank sitter and they arent doing anything except feed frozen anyway. I figure if something is going haywire, via controller warnings I can see it and try to fix remotely or get someone over to check the tanks.

i use a lorex on a stand at the side of the tank.

bought it to monitor some fish that i suspected were nipping corals. Not long after i had it i was on a short vacation when i glanced at the tank and saw tons of micros coming out of the returns. My ATO had failed and water in the return chamber was dangerously low. so i used my apex app to shut down the return pump until i got home the next morning. i had no one to get over to the house and check the ATO and help with top off so i'm sure having that camera saved my return pump.

For me it’s option C. I setup a Wyze camera before vacation and it was peace of mind seeing that my return pump was running and my floors weren’t flooded. I checked it about once per day.

I have three security cameras for the holidays:

* One full tank shot (with orange filter) to check everyone looks happy.
* One pointed at the sump to check on the return pump, skimmer and temperature.
* One side view camera pointing at the feeding station to watch during feeding times.

I check them once or twice daily and it really helps me enjoy the holidays.

Last year one of my lights crashed and my non-reefing neighbour kindly rebooted it. However when my torch coral fell over I just waited and stressed but it was fine in the end. Even with no one able to help I’d rather know.

I was thinking this also, I’m about to be gone for a while so what I ended up doing is finding a LFS and/or maintenance person to agree to log into my Apex units…

Are these independent “App” driven units , each with thier own phone app or are these tied into Apex?

I've used a camera and not used a camera, not having a camera doesn't bother me.

Discussions like this make me remember when we didn't have wifi cameras, we all still went on vacation, and 99.5% of time it was fine. Sometimes you need to draw a line about what to worry about.

I don’t own an apex and these three devices (temp controller, skimmer and return pump) are basic unconnected things so I use the cam to see the readings directly on the controllers.
