the coral is growing very well and I have never seen anything like this happen to my coral. why would this be happening?

(ignore the algae)

the other weird thing is that i can't find where it may have fallen off of

i also got a random flow generator and it has been blowing the coral around could that be it (i found where it came off of)

xenia are some of the weeds of coral. They spread and grow everywhere. If you don't like it in that spot, I would remove it right away

so its not a bad thing that is budded off?

I wouldn't worry if everything else looks fine, totally normal

oh so it throws the heads away to spread? wow i never knew it would do it like that i though my coral was dying lol. thanks!

That is one of the ways mine propagated in my previous tank. A lot of people find it invasive, since it can grow over other, more expensive corals. But it all depends on what you're going for. My tank was a 55g and at one point, it was almost 100% covered in xenia. I thought it was great and loved to watch it all pulsing. Everyone else seemed to enjoy it as well.

In my current tank, I have a different variety of xenia. The giant bali ball xenia. It looks the same but is more expensive, probably because it's not as invasive. it also doesn't pulse as much. I sorta miss the old stuff.

I do understand why some get caught off guard with it. If you buy and arrange a bunch of pricey corals, and then put a tiny piece of xenia in and it takes over you might not care for it. Again, it all depends on what sort of tank you're going for.
