I've been reading about a couple people using refugiums loaded with fast growing Xenia, one said that he removed his skimmer because they filtered out so much it stopped producing most of its' skimmate. This isn't something I really see myself trying at least not for a long time since my chaeto is doing an amazing job but I'm very interested in the idea. Anyone have one running? Or comments on how it would/wouldn't be a good idea?

It could travel into ur display tank!!! Personally I use bio pellets... safe, easy low and easy maintenance

Xenia reproduce aggressively but I doubt that it will spread like spores in the water column. When you need to export nutrients, frag and sell Xenia.

@sa6hir
I assume you need a protein skimmer with your biopellets? What do you do with the skimmate?

Yes you are correct in saying that I need a skimmer. I do have one? But I can say bio pellets are very effective once they are established. There is a lot of gunk being pulled out as well, nitrates are at 5 phosphate at 0.3

I use xenia and cespitularia in my fuge...works well.
