I thought this section was 'smashed' during transit when I first mounted the coral, but now it seems to have something growing. It looks nothing like the rest of the coral.

I am talking about the small stem looking pieces below the main coral(middle of photo)

Are these xenias? IMG_20181117_143832_834.jpg

Could be Xenia. Tough to tell from the picture. If it is what I think you mean, it does look like some kind of soft coral.

you say that with a smiley.. yet when i google, i went from excited to horrified:)

looks like them to me.. now whether to let them keep growing or kill them before it's the only thing in my tank?:)

Very true I shouldn't have put a smiley with that lol
Mine started out they same as yours a few polyps on a single frag , a few months later they were spreading all over my tank
They did looks nice but as soon as they started to grow on encrusted SPS I got the dog wormer out and wiped them out
I used panacur dog cat wormer
Luckily for you it's a case of just taking that frag out and scraping off and maybe sticking a bit of glue or putty over the spot they are growing on
Good luck my friend :)
