Tank has been up for 5 years in its current location. I use reef crystals and mix a 5 gallon batch at a time,let set for 24 hours then do my water changes.. As far as adding.. The last thing I added was thr xenias over a week ago.. Everything else has been seasoned in the tank for months to years.. The skimmer is NOT running because it wont run.. It keeps overflowing foam into cup which in turn overflows all over my floor...that skimmer has been a nightmare all in itself..

My skimmer does the same thing I took a bag and a rubber band and covered it up! It's unsightly but mine is hidden and it works like a dream skims everything! Before the bubbles would overflow into the tank and cause the ammonia to rise but now everything is working perfectly!!!

As trickedout900 mentioned, it is possible that the salt you are using has phosphates. I would recommend using a phosphate absorber for now to bring the levels to 0. I have a relatively clean tank (0 nitrites, 0.25 nitrates, 0 ammonia, 0 phospate, etc.) and my pulsing xenias which started out with a tiny frag are doing quite well. It split seven times so it is all over one of my live rocks. The water flow is not directed toward them but they do "go with the flow" so to speak. Anything too strong and I don't expect they would be able to feed I think. I have T5 HO flourescent lights which they seem to like.

I do have phosphate pillows in my filters.. Hmmm.. Can you possibly send me a picture of your skimmer? I am a visual person and am having a hard time grasping what you are explaining.

I did run the phosphate filter pads on my tank when I was having issues with phosphates. They seemed to do the trick pretty well. Is there a way you could plumb a drain hose (into a bucket or something) in that skimmer cup to keep it from overflowing?

that's a good question. I use the bag cuz I don't have much room in the back for a drain. you could also lower the air pressure from the skimmer you have that would help with the over flow problem.

There is a drain plug in the cup. Doesnt function properly. There is also no way to turn down the air

I know what you mean there, my skimmer had too small of a hole in it and always seem to get clogged, finally one day I drilled a 3/8 hole in and went to the hardware and picked up a threaded barb and screwed in it. Hasn't overflowed since

Drilled it? Hmm theres an idea... Do I just run the drain back into the tank then? How does that work with skimmate?

You want your skim mate to run out of the tank as its the gunk you are trying to remove. If you do drill it keep an eye on the flow though, if the skimmer isn't working properly you don't want it to drain your tank and it could potentially do so. I would do it and make sure you are around to watch it for the first day or so.
