Yay second clam!

Yay second clam! Is this guy a squammy? he’s 4” and hasn’t fully opened yet, probably still acclimating. Thanks in advance!

That is a T. noae. They are all wild caught. Even if you clean them well there may be egg mass of the Pyramid snails that you missed in there crevices if the shell. Keep a close eye on him. Remove and check weekly for 6 weeks or so until you are sure that there are no parasite.
they are a little rarer than other clams and usually a little more expensive.

I found one pyramid snail on him and have been checking every time I look at the tank. He’s isolated in a QT tank. Would a FW Dip help in removing some pests as I know I can’t dip this guy in any coral dips? Thanks for the ID!

I would not do FWD unless I think they are infected with PMD

Wow, That's a beauty! I usually run a toothpick into and along the tight spaces between the scutes. That will dislodge any baby PSnails. When the clam can completely close like yours, I gently scrub the clam with a toothbrush using temp matched freshwater and then usually quickly rinse it in the freshwater before placing back into the tank. I have never had a problem doing this.

Got it, I brushed it pretty well everywhere I could when I got it yesterday. Breaking off the scutes does sound like a helpful idea but I like the way they look. Will keep an eye on it, thanks for the suggestions!

I like scutes too! That is why I use the toothpick and scrape between the scutes, then gently brush quickly with freshwater of equal temp and place into the tank.

Here are the new scuttes and new shell coming in On the same clam. After that initial clean I did not find any more parasites. I guess I prefer to get them all at one time.

Your clam used to be call Teardrop Maxima. It is actually a different species and it is now a separate species, T. noae. They don't even interbreed with Maxima

Clam update:

It was in the quarantine tank for two weeks and I have inspected/brushed it regularly. While it was in there, it did not attach itself to any of the rock rubble underneath it. Once I moved it to the display, it attached within a day. This is the second day in the DT.

Is this as open/expanded as it will get? It may be slightly tilted to the right. It has attached to a couple of rocks I placed it on top of.

i expect the noae will expand its mantle further as it continues to settle in.

Yay finally opened up more in the DT! Still checking every evening with a flashlight to see if there are any pests or snails bothering it but so far so good!
