Hi there I have been doing the hobby for about a year now, did research and such before investing into everything and from what I gathered starting in a bigger tank is better because its less forgiving of problems and easier to control the nutrient import/export. Now when I first bought everything I knew cheaply made stuff wasnt going to get the results I wanted yet dishing out tons of money on kessils or radions off the get go didnt seem logical either as alot of others have made due with other lighting. So I started with a fluval 48inch 3.0 LED fixture granted I knew it wasnt going to perform as good as other things but I should see atleast some growth. I also invested into making a sump except instead of an overflow I use a cascade cannister filter to provide further filtration before it even hits the sump, yet all thats in the cannister is just a layer of filter pad, then bio balls, then another layer of filter pad then to the sump. When it first hits the sump the first thing it comes in contact with is a 300micron filter sock then into the skimmer chamber then the macroalgae area then to the return area. In the return area I have a seperate pump going into a brs 2 part reactor first stage is charcoal (also BRS) and then bio media then back into the return chamber, its all on low flow so contact time is hightened. Inside the main 75 gallon tank I have a 3k icecap gyre on the right side of the tank up high creating aggitation on the surface before hitting the other side of the glass and cascading down the bottom up again to the gyre, on top of that I have 2 jebao rw8's positioned mid level on the back of the tank, one on the left and one on the right both pointing towards the front glass on wave mode, the gyre is on 40% pulse as well. I have got more than enough life rock, more than enough bacteria as my nitrates and pho are actually 0 which I was trying to control in the begining and now that they are both 0 out I can begin maybe dosing nitrate and pho so that I am in control of the levels at all times instead of the system so that I can raise or lower them as needed. Coraline algae is growing good yet my corals are always acting weird, sometimes open sometimes not but they never fully open except the acan I have. I know you need patience and determination to make it in this hobby but after a year of buying stuff and doing research along the way and expirementing with lights and flow, etc I am at the point where I should have seen atleast some kind of growth and I have not, they are all still basically the same size I bought them a year ago, yet they wont die they just survive somehow. I cant figure it out as all my parameters are good(probably heard that a thousand times) but seriously they are, so if its the lights or flow thats the problem some help would be appreciated. I am sure I have the right tools to create the perfect flow yet I struggle with it, and the lights I cant really say because I have tried a few and without having a par meter and the corals not responding to lighter or darker or higher or lower intesity doesnt give me a ballpark on where to go next. So I am turning to you guys the experts to help me. If you want pics of the 75 gallon I can show those to but even though that tank is still running and being dosed by an auto doser to keep things stable I moved everything to my nano tank for the time being to figure out whats going on. Here is pics of the nano tank and the parameters of the nano tank.

ph 8.2-8.3
Alk 9-11
Cal 400-500
Mag 1400
Salinity 1.026
Temp 77
water change 10% every week
Filter Carbon and macro and filter pad
Light HIPARGERO LED Aquarium Light 30w, has only blue, violet, white all dimmable and can customize how much blue/violet or white I want. I usually keep the light at 100% blue/violet day and night, and during the day I keep them 100% blue/violet with whites on 30%

Flow right now in the 10g leathers and the dead gonio are receiving medium/high flow, the acan and zoa medium/low flow and same with the galaxea and mushroom and hammer.

Until I get these corals to grow and recoup I wont be putting them back in the main 75g, once they are stable and growing I will put them back into the main display which has the same values as the nano tank. Its just after a year now I should have seen some growth atleast. Dont know what I am doing wrong.

I was gonna say light too. One way to know is with a par meter. Around here, there is a LFS that rents one out. Also, if there is a reef club in your area you might reach out to them. Not only might someone have a meter, they might also be able to hook you up with some used lights. I use two Radion xr15’s on my tank. The tank is 36” long. Those two lights generate almost 200 watts of power. Also with a better light, you will also likely get better spectrum. Good luck!

Edit... I see you’re new around here. Let me be the first to say welcome! So glad you joined us!

BestMomEver, my tank is 48inch length and 24 deep, I was thinking about 2-3 ai prime or 2-3 radion, which is better and will it hit the bottom of 24deep tank? I am looking for about 80 par on bottom at least. And I know you guys said the light is not strong enough for the 75g but for the 10g the HIPARGERO light on the 10g even at full intesity should be enough? I have seen youtube videos of people that have proven growth on it in a 6-8month period of time, my problem still persists in the 10g as the 75g even though this HIPARGERO light for the 10g should be enough, so what else could be the problem besides light? does the HIPARGERO have enough par for the 10g in your opinions?

Just retested with hannah checker, pho is at 0.8 now and nitrates at 0.5 sometimes lower but corals still not really opening. Water cant be too clean I mean I still have a little algae problem and some cyano in small areas. Skimmer is only in the 75g but it pulls up dark gunk every 4 days. Chaeto is growing a bit slow but its growing. Any other possibilities?

I have 2 AI primes (not HD) on a 36" tank. 3 primes on a 48" tank would be roughly equivalent, ~a tad stronger. I supplement my prime with 2 T5s and I don't think the PAR is high enough so I wouldn't go with just 2 primes. 3 prime HDs might be OK. The Radion X15s are roughly 2X the PAR output of a prime. If you go to AI's website they have a cool comparison between their lights and other lights like Radions and Kessil to make this clear. Click on the Light Sciences link.

Yea I think I will settle on the x30 pro x2 however until I do get $1200 for that lol I am sure there is a way in the 10gallon to get them to grow right? I doubt I need a $500+ light to get any coral to grow as I have seen many others use random even china lights on a 10gallon and have success, so if I can get things to work on the 10gallon and be stable then I would just mimic that but x10 on the 75 gallon. In the 10g they still wont open up and they seem unhappy except for the acan who feeds regularly and is always puffed out and happy with vibrant strong colors, everything else is closed up for some reason even with the new light I got for the 10g which should be more than enough. And again we are all assuming its the light, it could very well be something else, but again I have been trying literally everything for the past year and nothing works so thats why its a bit frustrating but I am still willing to learn. So again we keep talking about my 75 gallon but everything is now in the 10gallon and they still wont open so right now I am trying to figure out why they wont open even in 10g, i figure that out and I can apply the fix to the big tank and throw them back in.

Sps probably won't grow with that light even in a 10g tank, I measured par and had no more than 200 in a 10 which is tough for most sps. I second the suggestion of three primes and also recommend reefbreeders photon v2+ for a cheaper option.

most of the stuff in the 10g is lps though, the photon seems excellent but at that price range wouldnt the radion 30pro be better for an extra $100 more or so?

Two X30s on your 75 should work fine. The light on your 10 gallon should be, on paper, adequate to grow LPS coral. So assuming that is the case then other factors could be: 1) Lights are too high (doubtful but corals do need an acclimation period to new lights); 2) lights are on too long (12 hr per day or less is the norm. As eggplantparrot stated, 24/7 lighting is not good for most organisms); 3) Lights spectrum is not right for coral (I'm stretching here cause they have a couple blues and purple LEDs so it seems OK. But they are an off shore little known manufacturer and could be cutting corners. Corals need some red in the spectrum so that must be coming from the white LEDs so maybe you could turn that up some more?); 4)Phosphate at 0.8 PPM seems very high. Nitrates are OK. (Phosphate is normally .08 or less. Was 0.8 ppm correct?).

As you probably know all tanks are different and the variables for success are many. My tank just sort of languished for the first year. I lost some fish and corals, treated the tank with different things Prazipro to kill fukes, Vibrant for algae and even a few doses of H2O2. Imo none of this was good for the health of the corals. I also played with my light settings too much and let my NO3 and PO4 get too low. For the past several months I have kept my PAR at 250 at the top of the rocks and 150 at the sand, these are estimates since I do not have a par meter. Most corals do not need real high PAR and quality LED's provide plenty of it even at lower settings. I have an RB Photon 48" V2 which is a little over 200 watts but I only run blues at 55% and white at 22%. My NO3 and PO4 are 2+ and .028, respectively. We have lately been spot feeding the corals and I think this may help. Currently everything is growing and showing much better coloration. The tank is a mix of lps and sps with several rock anemones. No softies.

As others have said, I definitely think that your light is the problem. Thirty watts just isn't sufficient to get good coral growth in a tank like yours... I would also say that the lack of spread from that light is the bigger issue; you can see how bright the middle of you tank is, almost like it has a spotlight hitting it. But as soon as you go a couple of inches to either side, the light level drastically drops off, especially toward the ends of the tank. AI Primes would be a good bet as you already said, or a Kessil.

Hang in there! Once you get some better lighting, I think you'll see some awesome growth. Welcome to the forum! ;Woot

you keep the lights on day AND night? that can't be good, phtosynthetic organisms need a dark rest period.

I'm guessing this might be the issue too, but no one has seen it, or caught it. The 30W of light is also the glaring issue whether the OP want's to admit it or not. Even in a 10G 30W of light isn't much.

Even though mine are T5's and not LED's, just for a small comparison. I have a 6 bulb 36" unit over my 80G. I have no idea what PAR is, but just in bulb power I'm running at 234W. Your running @ 30W, see the problem?

Another option are Orphek light bars or even one V4. They seem to be getting the most PAR according to Dana and BRS. Most people are going to recommend whatever they are using however there are many options available that would work well for you.

Yes, Orphek makes some excellent lights too, so that's an option... I just didn't know whether they made a size that would work well for OP's tank.

HE KEEPS HIS LIGHTS ON 24/7?

How do these people even get into this hobby.... Isnt it common sense to not run lights 24/7?
