I just started my 32 g biocube, and i am about to add fish. I'm wanting to get some fish and inverts that will add character, so I am thinking either a pistol/goby pair or a yellow headed jawfish for burrowing. I've read jawfish need 5-7" of sand. My sand bed is about 2" because I planned for pistol/goby. But recently I've read that the jawfish only need 5-7" in a mound for their hole and not everywhere else. Is this true or does the hole tank need to be deep?

It probably will ultimately depend on the personality of your Jawfish. I have 3”-4” of sand fairly consistent throughout my tank and one Jawfish would make mounds 5”-7” high while the other was perfectly fine with a 3” spot seated near the base of a large piece of live rock.

The common denominator is that the entrance to their burrows was typically at least equal to the height of the sand around them.

the entrance width was equal to the height of the sand around them?

Essentially, they’d build up the mound until they had a live rock ceiling to their tunnel. Make sure your live rock is secure and sitting on the bottom of your tank and not floating on the top of the sand.

First of all, they are notorious jumpers. They will find the smallest holes in the lid. Like previously said, live rock must sit on the bottom of their tank. I have lost a couple where the live rock collapsed on the cave killing the fish.

Oh yes I forgot about this

all my live rock is sitting on pvc pipe stilts for that reason so that it doesn't crush any fish

They are some of the coolest fish I ever had, but they jump every time. I dont use lids, but for this fish I did, and it still found a tiny opening to jump through and break my heart. I'd love to have another one, but they are expensive where I live, and I've had 2 jump already.
