"LPS" and "SPS" are made up categories by hobbyists to generalize care for coral. This is a perfect example of how and why they mean nothing, and matter very little. Sure it's nice to have a forum that specializes in a given general type of coral, but past that don't worry about what they would fit into.

You're probably referring to Turbinaria reniformis, which we commonly see in the hobby and is often called "srcoll coral". They prefer higher lighting and higher flow as Paul mentioned, at least enough flow to keep detrius from settling on the coral. Higher flow generally causes them to scroll more. Very cool, underated coral IMO. They're from the very interesting family Dendrophyllidae which consists of both phototsynthetic and nonphotosynthetic corals (such as Dendrophyllia and Tubastrea).

Scroll coral, Turbinaria reinformis is not a type of Monti!! If you're going to compare polyp size, Turbinaria polyps are vastly larger than a Montipora polyp. I've always considered it an LPS, and I believe it's generally considered an LPS, but as was mentioned, SPS and LPS are "hobby" names, not scientific. Some "SPS" will have larger polyps than some "LPS."

After doing a quick Google search on "Turbinaria coral," I find that Live Aquaria calls it an SPS, About.com calls it an LPS/SPS...lol, while several other places list it in the LPS category. If you do a Google search for Scroll Coral, you come up with results calling it LPS and SPS, but all are referring to the same Turbinaria reinformis, usually. Who really knows. lol

I will say that mine grows FAST, is fragged often and actually prefers lower light and lower flow. It's actually in an area where part of it is shaded. The shaded side grows much faster.

+1 I for one need to make a more conscious effort to learn the proper names of corals.

I got one for 5 bucks from unique coarsl ive sale. When I got my first corals, which was just a few months ago. I got an acan and a digitata and a setosa. i won the acan on ebay so the same person had these other 2 sps going off for 5 bucks so I bought tem and my dumb self immediately put them in the high area at top pf tank because I read sps 1ove light but what I ididnt know yet was to gradually aclimate them to it so they bleached from head to toe, so I threw them out! Dumb of me because my lfs was going to take them as trade before they bleached! Anyway, now I know to gradually aclimate this coral and hopefully I will have better luck. The other lps are all doin fine.
