Yellow tail damsel with red gill covers

Yellow tail damsel has a red gill cover and I suspect bacterial infection . I ordered furan 2 and metroplex. I did a methylene blue dip. I have prazipro on hand. He and his roomate went thru copper treatment but I never did the prazipro treatment. Should I dose prazipro now? Incase it is underlying gill flukes?

Have you checked ammonia? I'd recommend doing a freshwater dip first to verify/rule out flukes. No sense treating with prazi if you don't have to

Think I worded that wrong. I always do prazi as part of my qt protocol. Given you're seeing red gills, my first thought is ammonia burn. Either way, I'd start with the fw dip. If you see flukes do prazi and antibiotics.. just make sure you aerate heavily. If you don't see flukes stick with antibiotics for 10-14 days. Then do prazi.
Are there any symptoms aside from the red gills? Yawning/twitching/etc?
Do you by chance have a pic?

I can not get a picture of the little turd. No ammonia. The badge is fine and this tank has been up and running for many months now. It is a 20L QT that has had fish for a prolonged time while I rebuild my DT. I did do fresh water dips on both of the fish awhile ago. I did not see flukes. I think that is why I did not do the prazi.

You may want to test your ammonia alert badge to be sure it is still operating properly. Just hold it over an open bottle of ammonia. The color should change rapidly.

It is not red gills as much as a red angry sore on his gill cover or gill plate. Eating and swimming fine.

Gotcha. I'd go ahead as planned with the antibiotics for 10-14 days then. I saw that you ordered furan-2 and metro, do you have kanaplex as well? The trio will treat a broad range of bacterial infections since that appears to be the likely scenario if it is not an ammonia issue. You can also do another methylene blue dip to buy you time until the meds arrive. That or Ruby Reef Rally if you have it

For "red sores" Nitrofuracine Green powder works really well for these early surface bacterial infections. It's a favorite of LFS, wholesalers, and shippers.

I thought the furan 2 was equivelant of nitrofuricine, so ordered that.

the Furon treatment is going well. The fish looks better, and I have been feeding him Rods. I fish tank smells bad though. Kinda like a dirty freshwater tank can smell. Hope that this does not mean it is going to get ugly.
